Why Nikola Tesla was the greatest geek who ever lived Additional notes from the author: If you want to learn more about Tesla, I highly recommend reading Tesla: Man Out of Time Also, this Badass of the week by Ben Thompson is what originally inspired me to write a comic about Tesla. Ben's also got a book out which is packed full of awesome. There's an old movie from the 80s on Netflix Instant Queue right now about Tesla: The Secret of Nikola Tesla. It's corny and full of bad acting, but it paints a fairly accurate depiction of his life. The drunk history of Tesla is quite awesome, too.

How to Make a Kiln - Build your own Kiln for Pottery Build your own Kiln for Pottery 0Google + One way of firing pottery at home is to make your own kiln. A small homemade kiln can be cheap and easy to build - a great solution for homeschooling pottery classes. Sponsored Links You will need : An old oil drum or metal dustbin with lid.Ceramic fibre blanket (such as Kaowool)Refractory CementA burner from a hardware store (the sort used for soldering).A kiln shelf that will fit inside.A propane gas bottle. The shelf, cement and fibre can be bought from a pottery supplies store. If you are using an oil drum then you need to cut a lid in the top. Then cut and glue the fibre to the inside of the container. The best video I have found that explains this process is this one from Simon of Sleachpots Simon says you should get about 20 firings from the gas bottle depending on the duration and number of pots you are firing. Relativistic Baseball What would happen if you tried to hit a baseball pitched at 90% the speed of light? - Ellen McManis Let’s set aside the question of how we got the baseball moving that fast. We'll suppose it's a normal pitch, except in the instant the pitcher releases the ball, it magically accelerates to 0.9c. From that point onward, everything proceeds according to normal physics The answer turns out to be “a lot of things”, and they all happen very quickly, and it doesn’t end well for the batter (or the pitcher). The ball is going so fast that everything else is practically stationary. The ideas of aerodynamics don’t apply here. These gamma rays and debris expand outward in a bubble centered on the pitcher’s mound. The constant fusion at the front of the ball pushes back on it, slowing it down, as if the ball were a rocket flying tail-first while firing its engines. After about 70 nanoseconds the ball arrives at home plate. Suppose you’re watching from a hilltop outside the city.

I've relayed this material to Christians, and some of them respond with much happiness, declaring that God has preserved a wonderful record of Biblical accounts in the Chinese language. Well, I dunno about that. I haven't come to any conclusion myself. But here are some counterarguments I've thought of, which should hopefully persuade the reader to be wary of this material. 200 universities just launched 560 free online courses. Here’s the full list. If you haven’t heard, universities around the world offering their courses online for free (or at-least partially free). These courses are collectively called as MOOCS or Massive Open Online Courses. In the past six years or so, close to 800 universities have created more than 8,000 of these MOOCs. And I’ve been keeping track of these MOOCs the entire time over at Class Central, ever since they rose to prominence. In the past three month alone, more than 200 universities have announced 560 such free online courses. I’ve compiled this list below and categorized the courses into the following subjects: Computer Science, Mathematics, Programming, Data Science, Humanities, Social Sciences, Education & Teaching, Health & Medicine, Business, Personal Development, Engineering, Art & Design, and finally Science. If you have trouble figuring out how to signup for Coursera courses for free, don’t worry — I’ve written an article on how to do that, too. Calculus Applied!
Words as Images by Ji Lee Whenever we read a news story, book, letter, or any other form of text our brain relates specific words with previously seen images. By accessing our past memories, like a hard drive, our brain is able to create a visual illustration simply out of words. Taking this one step further, Ji Lee eliminates the need for our brain to do this process. Ji Lee takes popular words and brings them to life by adding a sense of character, fun and playfulness to them. “When we were children, letters were like fun toys. Today we will feature creative examples from Ji’s book titled “Word As Image.” “This project started nearly twenty years ago as an assignment in my typography class at art school. Anyone can create a word as image. Note: All Rights Reserved by Ji Lee. Check out our previous articles: Did you enjoy this article?
