Teenager moves video icons just by imagination Teenage boys and computer games go hand-in-hand. Now, a St. Louis-area teenage boy and a computer game have gone hands-off, thanks to a unique experiment conducted by a team of neurosurgeons, neurologists, and engineers at Washington University in St. Louis. The boy, a 14-year-old who suffers from epilepsy, is the first teenager to play a two-dimensional video game, Space Invaders, using only the signals from his brain to make movements. Getting subjects to move objects using only their brains has implications toward someday building biomedical devices that can control artificial limbs, for instance, enabling the disabled to move a prosthetic arm or leg by thinking about it. Many gamers think fondly of Space Invaders, one of the most popular breakthrough video games of the late ’70s. The aliens can shoot back at the player, who has to evade, moving left and right. Mike F Shaw Photography Blog Beginner's Guide: Installing Heatsinks There’s no way to get around it: An Overclocker’s life, be it frugal or expensive, inventive or acquisitive, will always center around buying new parts. The following is intended as a Beginner’s Guide to the selection and purchase of the parts we need to acquire to practice our art and keep our hobby alive and interesting. Our first step must always be to select the right part. Among all the parts that have to be assembled, perhaps one stands out as the defining element. Not all parts will work with the motherboard you select equally well. So the first step in parts selection is deciding upon a motherboard and finding out which parts have an “affinity” with her. Spend time learning what the “Winning combinations” are. For a beginner, an entire month spent in the Forum before spending a dime is NOT too long nor a waste of time. It certainly created a significant buzz on release, with the company taking advantage of the short back focus of the mirrorless mount to deliver a lens whose compact size belies its dramatically wide 114º angle of view and constant F4 maximum aperture. The 7-14mm is far and away the smallest zoom currently available to offer such a wide angle of view; compared to the Olympus equivalent for Four Thirds DSLRs its dimensions are shrunk by at least 20% each way, and it's just 40% of the weight. Like all other zooms this wide, the 7-14mm F4 features a distinctive design, with a bulbous front element and an integrated hood to protect that large expanse of glass against stray light. Fossil hunters dig up a Jurassic sea monster | Science | guardia The remains of a giant meat-eating sea monster that patrolled the oceans during the reign of the dinosaurs have been unearthed on an island in the remote Arctic archipelago of Svalbard. Norwegian fossil hunters recovered the rear half of the formidable reptile's skull in south-west Spitsbergen in what has been described as one of the most significant Jurassic discoveries ever made. The predator has been identified as a new species of pliosaur, a group of extinct aquatic reptiles that had huge skulls, short necks and four flippers to power them through the water. Measurements of the partial skull and 20,000 other bone fragments uncovered at the site showed that the creature was at the top of the food chain, preying on squid, fish and other marine reptiles. The pliosaur's head was twice as big as that of a Tyrannosaurus rex and was filled with an impressive set of 12-inch teeth. "This is really big.
