Les couleurs Les prismes sont des objets transparents de forme triangulaire, comme sur la photo ci-dessus. Quand une lumière blanche les traverse, il se produit quelque chose d'étonnant. Ce chapitre commence comme le précédent : dans une pièce sombre, avec une fente dans les rideaux (ou les volets). Le mince rai de lumière ainsi obtenu est dirigé, cette fois-ci, vers un prisme, au centre de la pièce. On observe alors sur l'écran la figure ci-contre (à droite). Cette image ne se forme pas en face de la fente. Plus surprenant : il y a toutes sortes de couleurs dans cette image, alors qu'on n'a utilisé que la blanche lumière du Soleil. Avant Newton, on pensait que la lumière était fatiguée, affaiblie par la traversée du prisme. Isaac Newton rejette cette hypothèse. Et là, waouuu... On retrouvait de la lumière blanche à la sortie du second prisme. Le premier prisme avait donc "décomposé" (on dit dispersé) la lumière blanche et un autre prisme pouvait la recomposer.
