radio astronomy: a project by r a d i o q u a l i a Josh Halliday interviews Mark Rock, founder of Audioboo | Media The radio crackled into life. An ominous, drawling American voice addressed the enemy below: "Libyan ship or vessel, remain anchored. Do not leave port. The voice repeats the warning in French and then Arabic. Mark Rock, Audioboo's founder and chief executive, wears a satisfied smile as he recalls his most memorable "boos". Described as a Twitter for audio, Audioboo lets you record short bursts and publish them online directly from your smartphone. Social networks "The whole history of Audioboo is really about proving that the spoken word can go social," Rock says. For a man who sold his first business (the interactive TV firm Static2358) for $60m (£36m) in 2001, the 47-year-old Rock plays down his triumphs at every turn. He was stuck in a late 80s rut when the Apple Macintosh SE/30 came along and changed his life. But Rock, a father of four, is in a hurry. Unlike most other two-year-old startups, Audioboo is to begin charging its heaviest users. Yet, Rock could help a bit too.

Radio Art: An Acoustic Media Art Form | Colin Black First published in 4th Media Art Scoping Study Symposium Proceedings radio art is a form of media based art form that usually reveals itself to the audiencesonically. As Sabine Breitsameter has pointed out, ‘I think radio art is media art -- an acousticmedia art … on the technical level, by reflecting the use of microphone, tape, loudspeaker, transmitter and receiver’ (Leonardson 1995).I have also previously argued how radio art differs to some other acousmatic forms; An important aspect of radio art is that it is fundamentally a form of acoustic mediaart, as distinguished from other acousmatic forms (e.g., acousmatic forms of electro-acoustic music or acousmatic “tape” music). Contextualising Radio Art as a Form of Media Arts When contextualising radio art as a form of acoustic media art (a subset of media arts) westart to see the blurring of borders between radio art, telematic art (with acoustic elements)and film and TV soundscape (see figure 1).
