Just what is Julia Stiles playing on the fifth season of Dexter, which is back on Showtime (Sundays, 9 p.m. ET/PT)? As a preteen, Stiles, 29, cut her teeth on experimental theater in New York. So handling Dexter, the serial killer who masquerades as a blood-spatter-pattern expert for the Miami Metro Police Department while hunting down other serial killers, should pose no problems. "My character, Lumen, unexpectedly comes into Dexter's life," Stiles says cryptically. One thing is clear: She's not a replacement for Rita (Dexter's wife, who was found dead in a bathtub at the end of last season). "They've said they're not doing a big, bad killer again," Stiles insists. Stiles is sitting in her dressing room at Sunset-Gower Studios in Hollywood. "Some actors use Twitter a lot," Stiles says. She lives modestly. Even in her leisure time, Stiles moderates herself. She thought it would be fun to be onstage.
