Mac OS X slow for 10-15 minutes after boot – THE FIX - mattgadient.com Scroll down to the pictures if you want to get right to the fix. The Symptoms: The actual boot-up is pretty quick. As soon as you log in, it slows down to a crawl. The desktop takes forever to load after boot.Programs take forever to start immediately after boot. You may hear the hard drive ticking (thrashing) during this slow period. It may appear as though the hard drive is swapping during this slow period. Sound like the problem you’re having? If the answer to that is “yes”, here’s the next question…. Actually, it’s not bootcamp’s fault. So how to we fix it? It’s a bit of a convoluted process, so I’ve tried to make this pretty simple. 1) Boot into Windows (your bootcamp partition). 2) Run the “Command Prompt” program as an Administrator. (1) Click "Start", (2) go to "All Programs / Accessories", (3) RIGHT CLICK on the "Command Prompt" program, and (4) choose "Run as administrator". 3a) Type cd and press enter. 3b) Type type NUL > .metadata_never_index and press enter. Exporting static models from Maya to Crysis. This page gives instructions about the way to export static models (.cgf files) from Maya to Crysis. For animated characters, please refer to this page. Installation instructions for MayaCGF can be found on this page. The Geometry: When working in Maya, you should make sure to turn off two-sided lighting in the viewport (Lighting->Two Sided Lighting). The model can be constituted of any number of separated meshes. You don’t have to delete the history when exporting a static model, although sometimes there’s no way around it (see Troubleshooting section). Physics Proxy: Before you export your model, you should make it solid by creating a collision mesh, also called a “physics proxy”. IMPORTANT: Do not turn the visibility of the physics meshes (or their parents) off. For a mesh called “myMesh”, you should name the proxy mesh “myMesh_Phys” and make sure it is parented to the top node along with the mesh itself. LODs (Level Of Detail objects): This paragraph deals with static model LODs.

How to Disable (or Enable) Spotlight in Mac OS X Lion Completely disabling and reenabling Spotlight in Mac OS X Lion, OS X Mountain Lion, and OS X Mavericks can be done with the help of the Terminal. The following command unloads the Spotlight mds agent from launchd, thereby preventing the daemon from running or indexing any drives entirely. Open up the Terminal (found in /Applications/Utilities/) and enter the following commands based on the need to either disable or reenable Spotlight indexing. This will effect indexing on all drives connected to the Mac. Disable Spotlight The primary method is using launchctl, this will require the administrative password: sudo launchctl unload -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.metadata.mds.plist Another approach is to use the older indexing method of “sudo mdutil -a -i off” which turns off indexing only, but more on that in a minute. Reenable Spotlight The guaranteed way to reenable Spotlight is to reload it into launchd using launchctl: Use whichever method is most appropriate for your needs.

Levels of TeX A friend asked us once, “Should I use LaTeX or MiKTeX?” In various guises, this is a common question, seemingly innocent, but actually betraying a fundamental confusion about the levels of operation in the TeX world. As a further confusion, the word “TeX” can be used to refer to any of a myriad of items at any level. Starting at the top: Distributions:MiKTeX, TeX Live, … These are the large collections of TeX-related software to be downloaded and installed. When someone says “I need to install TeX on my machine”, they're usually looking for a distribution. Output formats TeX source files can be typeset into several different output formats, depending on the engine. At a high level, the output format that gets used depends on the program you invoke. To get HTML, XML, etc., output, the tex4ht program is commonly used. ConTeXt ConTeXt is a special case, straddling levels. References Of course, this short web page is only a brief introduction to the basics.
