Monique Royer

Caitlin Twitter | The Social Robot 09Nov Category: Et cetera, Kelsey Comments: By Caitlin Burns Social Media and New Media go hand in hand in the entertainment industry, but for years what people have seen presented is the same material, be it a commercial, TV program, film or short simply repurposed again and again from big screen to cell phone to YouTube to Facebook. While that repurposed content may be brilliant and entertaining, it has a fairly short shelf life, easily displaced by the next viral fad. So what is the next step?

Adaptive Streaming with H264 Streaming Module back Adaptive streaming is similar to pseudo streaming, but instead of serving one large video file, the video is delivered in a series of short HTTP downloads (segments). This delivery technique is described in this article. Note that we are requesting Virtual Video Clips from the webserver. The underlying video is just *one* file, so you can use your original encoded videos. The pros of this method are: Fast start: an initial burst is sent to quickly start the movie. The cons of this method are: Although the streaming module delivers the segments accurate to the frame, the Flash player cannot append the video clips seamlessly. This is an example of a Flash player using Virtual Video Clips for playback. The featured movie is Cowboy Canoe Coma. Of course you can also encode the video at multiple bitrates and switch dynamically between them depending on available network bandwidth. The example source code is available for review.

Insurance against sunsets: Munich Re steps in if your solar panel provider goes bust With solar panel manufacturers dropping like Arkansas blackbirds, Germany's Munich Re is coming to the rescue. It is now selling insurance that protects solar park operators in the event that their panel provider goes bankrupt. In partnership with Deustsche Bank, Munich Re will indemnify the operator after the manufacturer tanks, should panels deteriorate below guaranteed performance. It will also "provide the financing to compensate for the reduced output," according to a press release announcing the product. The insurance in effect picks up where the manufacturer's warranty leaves off after bankruptcy voids it. Without such insurance, banks may refuse to lend the capital necessary to build solar farms, Munich Re notes in the release. "Our aim in developing and marketing the optional coverage was to further facilitate solar park investment by assuming the risk of the module manufacturer's insolvency," says Munich Re board member Thomas Blunck. Twitter Fiction Twitter is a rapidly growing social networking platform that allows members to send messages of 140 characters or less to other members who subscribe to, or "follow," their updates. Twitter asks the question, "What are you doing?" but many Twitter users go far beyond the mundane, using the platform in creative ways. A number of writers have started experimenting with using the Twitter platform for "publishing" fiction. Twitter fiction takes many forms, from microfiction, in which an entire story is told in 140 characters or less, to longer fiction delivered in Twitter-sized blocks of 140 characters. Below this is a directory of fiction on Twitter, of all types. Clare Bell, author of the Named series, is Tweeting a new, original novelette in the series. Bar Code Madness! Artist Scott Blake is known for making art from QR codes and bar codes. Each code can be individually scanned and linked to the person who is being portrayed. E.g. the Elvis Presley image is connected to a large number of CDs and music by the singer. Notes by Blake (published at the Barcode Art website): I have made more than 30 large-scale digital portraits of cultural icons using actual barcodes connected to some aspect of their lives. Top: Portrait of Amy Goodman made with 2,304 QR Codes that link to nine years of Democracy Now videos. Photo and artwork © Scott Blake Link via CMYBacon

Tools and Tips for Creating Transcripts | Blog Accessibility Last week I shared the benefits of providing a transcript in addition to captioning a video (an accessibility must!). But, short of transcribing each word yourself, how do acquire the transcript? Here are a few suggestions: Laura Fitton recommends SpeakerText – a fast and affordable transcription service. Weston Norton suggests CastingWords – the budget package offers transcripts at $0.75/minute. Do you use other tools or methods for creating transcripts? Transcripts provided by the National Public Radio (NPR) offer a good model. When creating transcripts for videos, adding details about the setting, actions and such may be beneficial to those relying solely on the transcript. Once the spoken word is captured, that text can be used to caption the video (again, essential for accessibility) and repurposed to create products in other formats.

HOW TO: Play Recorded Twitter Conversations In Sync With Your Favorite Shows Watching television shows at the time they air is so 2000s — about 40% of US households now own a DVR and another 40% regularly watch long form video online. Viewers who want to pair real-time online conversation with television, however, are still left out when it comes to television-on-demand. Startup service TweePlayer, which launched its public beta Tuesday, aims to provide a solution for these viewers that gives the best of both worlds. The product records real-time conversations surrounding television events and syncs them with recorded episodes. Users can select Twitter conversations from shows, sporting events or award shows to play as they watch the recorded event on their televisions. So far, the startup has a list of about 5,000 events for which it is recording conversations based on dynamic target keywords. Eventually the company plans to give users an option to create more specific conversation channels. [data via NYT and Park Associates]

Photosynth Photosynth is a software application from Microsoft Live Labs and the University of Washington that analyzes digital photographs and generates a three-dimensional model of the photos and a point cloud of a photographed object.[1] Pattern recognition components compare portions of images to create points, which are then compared to convert the image into a model. Users are able to view and generate their own models using a software tool available for download at the Photosynth website. History[edit] Photosynth is based on Photo Tourism, a research project by University of Washington graduate student Noah Snavely.[2] Shortly after Microsoft's acquisition of Seadragon in early 2006, that team began work on Photosynth, under the direction of Seadragon founder Blaise Agüera y Arcas.[3] Microsoft released a free tech preview version on November 9, 2006. In March 2010, Photosynth added support for Gigapixel panoramas stitched in Microsoft ICE. Process[edit] Capabilities[edit] In the media[edit]
