Internet Web Search, "And" The most useful trick of boolean algebra is to combine your search keywords with the operator AND, which ensures that the web pages returned include all of those keywords. This lets you search for several keywords at once to narrow down your search to just the most relevant content. While some search engines assume the AND function by default if you just list keywords all in a row, others will consider some of the words optional, some will combine the keywords with the OR operator instead, and others apply different optimization rules that can lead to unpredictable results. To illustrate the numerical advantage of the AND combination over the OR combination, consider the difference between the results returned by the searches "mozart or biography" and "mozart and biography". mozart or biography. The results of searches on Alta Vista and Google listed below show that the AND search returns many times fewer pages than the OR search, making it that much more focused and useful. NEAR.

The Royal Treatment As a young teacher, I was forced to use basal readers with my 4th graders, and have at least three reading groups—unbelievably referred to in faculty meetings as the three reading levels—Bluebirds, Robins, and Crows. None really fit any of my students, and I got tired of hearing how father and mother gathered the whole family, including the dog for a picnic in the country. Believe me that was a big stretch for basal families, who were usually confined to the area behind a white picket fence. What I did I managed to get my hands on a box of assorted paperbacks, with multiple copies, which were in a storeroom. I think they were labeled Library, but the dust labeled them mine. Change I collected all the basal readers and shelved them. The Authors My students loved Beverly Cleary, Judy Blume, and went absolutely bonkers for Robert Newton Peck, author of A Day No Pigs Would Die, Soup, and Soup and Me. People Search by Address Expect quite a few dead people to be listed as living at an address if it has been around for awhile, for example. A search of my name also had me living in two cities that I have never even been to before. The website did know my age and names of my relatives though. Spooky. WhitePages.Com - This is the actual search engine that powers most of the free searches on this page. ReversePhoneDirectory.Com - A page that contains fill-out forms to search several other people and address search websites. 411.Com - The same address search results as you will find on whitepages.com, with even more annoying pop-up ads. SearchBug.Com - Slightly different than the sites listed above. For some reason those sites do not have a search by address feature that I can find though. Langenberg.Com - This website will also find names and phone numbers from an address, based upon InfoSpace.Com data. U.S. Intelius.Com - PAID $ERVICE Costs $7.95 per search or $19.95 for a "24 hour pass" of searches.

Free 33 Page Guide - Google for Te Google offers some wonderful tools for teachers, but I've learned over the last couple of weeks that while teachers are aware of many of Google's offerings like search, docs, and maps many teachers aren't aware of how to use these tools or what these tools offer beyond the obvious. Therefore, I sat down yesterday and started putting together this guide to using Google search, docs, books, news, and maps in the classroom. This guide avoids some of the obvious things, like using Google Docs for collaborative writing, and instead focuses on some of the lesser-used Google tools options like publishing an online quiz using Google Docs. In all there are 33 pages containing 21 ideas and how to instructions for creating Google Maps placemarks, directions creating and publishing a quiz with Google Docs forms, directions for embedding books into your blog, and visual aids for accessing other Google tools. Update: In July 2010 I released a companion to this guide titled Google for Teachers II.
