Flu-Buster Clementine Creamsicle Smoothie I’ve been playing nurse for the past few days, doing my best to help Eric beat his flu (and not catch it myself!). We’ve been eating lots of healthy dinner leftovers like Spicy Rainbow Rice & Bean Salad, Ultimate Vegan Lentil Walnut Loaf, Creamy Tomato Barley Risotto, and Back on Track Wheat Berry and Bean Salad, sure to give any cold a run for its money. I also decided to pull out my Winter Flu-Buster Secret Weapon this week… Ah Clementine’s, the perfect winter fruit to ward off a cold, don’t you think? Eric and I have been eating these juicy little delights non-stop, but when he started to feel like he was getting a fever, all he wanted was something COLD to soothe his throat and help his body cool down. I started thinking about packing vitamin C into a delicious smoothie and then it hit me – Why not make a smoothie based off of one of our favourite childhood popsicles- the Creamsicle? Yes, this just may work. Flu-Buster Clementine Creamsicle Smoothie Yield: ~2 cups Ingredients:

My method of choice is always “a little of this, a little of that”, usually based on whatever fresh produce happens to be hanging around my house. But a smoothie I made this week happened to be exceptionally tasty. So I decided to snap a quick pic and share it with you all. It’s basically a simple pineapple smoothie, featuring some healthy Greek yogurt, banana, and my favorite smoothie ingredient — fresh ginger! Pineapple Ginger Smoothie Ingredients 1 1/2 cups diced fresh pineapple 1 banana 1/2 cup Greek yogurt (I used vanilla, but you can choose your favorite flavor) 1 Tbsp. grated fresh ginger 1/2 cup ice 1/2 cup pineapple juice or water Method Blend all ingredients together in a blender until smooth. Ali’s Tip: For a different twist, try adding in a pinch of ground cinnamon to this smoothie!

Roy G. Biv Smoothies I’ve had a few requests over the last few weeks for some smoothie recipes because I let it slip that Betsy and I generally just have a big smoothie for breakfast everyday. Turns out our daily smoothie recipe is a mix between yellow, red, and indigo, but that’ll make more sense to you later. Smoothies can be so varied I really struggled for awhile on how to present a wide spectrum of recipes in one post. That was, of course, until I saw a guy riding a bike last weekend with a rainbow sticker on his backpack. When I saw the rainbow I thought, now those would be some awesome smoothies! Anytime I think of a rainbow, I can’t help but think of the mnemonic device for remembering the order of the colors: ROY G. After some tinkering, I present to you, the ROY G. Pretty. Each of the recipes I used are below, but before that, there are a few quick notes on smoothies that I think are important. First, smoothies are all about balance. So let’s take a trip through Roy G. The Red Smoothie. Delicious.

Salt-Rising Bread | Pioneer Bread | Good Neighbors Blog — Country Magazine Whatever you call it, it's Country's all-time most requested recipe. Doris Musick making Pioneer Bread Doris Musick's mixing up a batch of Pioneer Bread, using an ancient recipe book given to her by her father-in-law. Pioneer Bread Doris' hard work results in golden, crusty loaves of butter-melting pioneer bread. In December 2006, Country published an article “Pioneer Bread” from Doris Musick of Cleveland, Virginia. I’d joined Country‘s team as editorial assistant years after Doris’ article, so when I had the chance to share the recipe on this blog, I had to go back and find it. “I have long marveled at the ingenuity of past generations,” Doris wrote. “As I pored over the worn delicate pages, I chuckled over one dish with instructions that began, “Take 7 or 8 hog’s heads …” There was an intriguing recipe for lye soap. The rest of the article takes you through Doris’ baking experience—notes that are woven into the bread recipe below. Doris Musick, Cleveland, Virginia Stir well.

Yes! You CAN Eat Indian Corn! And it is Yummy! You see why I have ears and ears of Indian Corn laying around! I consider it eye candy! That blue one on the left is my absolute favorite. But eat it? However.......... in the interest of finding out, I decided to sacrifice three of the least attractive ears in my collection Since we have had a unusually cool summer this year, the Indian Corn is not yet ready to harvest. Fresh Indian Corn from the this year's harvest is not dry enough for grinding - you will need to let it dry a few months. Removing the kernels from the husks is very easy as they pop right off when you apply gentle pressure with your fingers. I was feeling quite timid about this little experiment - mainly because I had no clue what I was doing! Very noisy! I am aware that there is a wonderful machine available for grinding grain, but since I don't own one, I wanted to see if I could find a tool more commonly found in kitchens that would work. Just look at this! I found these three really useful and informative posts.

Chocolate Chip Lava Cookies I am so in love with these darn chocolate lava cookies! What is it about a warm, gooey chocolate chip cookie stuffed with decadent, rich, melted chocolate that makes it so irresistible?? Especially when topped with vanilla ice cream. These are one of Kev’s favorite homemade treats, and he usually asks me to make them at least once a week. They are so simple to whip up, and such a treat! All you really need for these fabulous cookies is your favorite cookie dough and a bag of chocolate chips. Since these cookies are absolutely gushing with delicious rich chocolate, my favorite chocolate chips for this recipe are the Hersey’s Milk Chocolate chips. Now let’s make some chocolate lava cookies! Place the flattened cookie dough in the bottom of a well-greased standard sized muffin tin. Now for our gooey, rich milk chocolate filling. Lay the Ziploc bag flat in the microwave, spreading out the chocolate chips in a single layer. Cut a small tip off the Ziploc bag and layer over the cookies. 1.

Thanksgiving!! « Bountiful Baskets Blog I love the fall season- it exudes comfort. Walking outside surrounded by crisp, cold air and catching the scent of the first lighted fireplace of the season; wrapping tight in a blanket, sipping tea, and reading a book on the couch while enjoying the deep red, orange, and brown harvest decorations that fill every corner of my home; bundling the family in sweaters, hats, and mittens to play a game of flag football and crunch fallen leaves- these are only some of the simple pleasures that this season brings. Of course one of the greatest comforts is fall food cooked in a kitchen filled with family. When the smell of pumpkin, cinnamon, lemon, turkey, and fresh baked bread come floating in, my mouth waters and my heart melts. It is hard not to feel grateful when surrounded by all of these blessings. Mocha and cream cheese brownie 28th October 2010By GuestPhotography by Adam Much to the delight of the blog team we have a new member, Genevieve. Genevieve has just started in product development for cooking products as a product evaluator. She hails from Samoa where her mother owns her own catering business and with a food science background we’re expecting big things! Anyway over to Genevieve and her heirloom recipe: “There is something about brownies that makes me go gaga over them and lose all my willpower. Throughout the years I have come across different chocolate brownie recipes but always with the uncertainty of how well they would turn out. Alas I found two “absolute best” brownie recipes in my opinion and upon noticing they had a cream cheese version I knew this was the one! To suit my taste preferences, I used Whittaker’s Mocha chocolate with 70% cocoa as I wanted to use this opportunity to incorporate a coffee flavour into my brownies —but you’re welcome to use any chocolate flavour you prefer. -- 1.
