45 Beautifully Designed Book Covers

Posted by Andrew Lindstrom / Lists / June 11th, 2009 I would imagine that nobody hates the expression don’t judge a book by its cover more than an actual book cover designer. Obviously, the metaphor isn’t really about books – but still, that’s gotta sting a little. Let’s face it, if people didn’t actually “judge books by their covers”, there would be a lot of graphic designers out of a job. So in the spirit of judging books by their covers, I’ve compiled a list of 45 beautifully designed book covers that I find inspiring. Incredible Inception-esque Illustrations Could these illustrations have been inspired by Christopher Nolan's psychological sci-fi action film Inception? How else could you explain how they look like they're based upon dreams within a dream? Regardless, full-time freelance illustrator Miguel Mansur has made one mesmerizing collection of work that's filled with strange and shocking stories. "I am a fellow who feels that he can bring extra value to clients project more so then what a client would receive from any stock image," he says on his Behance page. "I like to bring new and different concepts into the projects I dive into. So that the client’s end result is a very unique soulful product that stands out in today’s commercial world." Update: After we wrote this post, we got in touch with the illustrator to ask him a few questions, including if his illustrations have been, in fact, inspired by Inception. Were you ever inspired by the movie Inception when you created your illustrations? How do you stay creative? Peace.

4,800 Puzzle Pieces Table What could have possibly driven 27-year-old Rupert McKelvie to spend hundreds of painstaking hours to assemble 4,800 puzzle pieces into this fully functional table? "I was all too aware of the frustration of nearing the end and realizing there were ‘missing pieces,’" explains McKelvie. "It became something that would never see completion. Left to gather dust in the attic, amongst all other things discarded and lost in time. The virtual world of computer games, in which everything is ever more rapid and instantaneous has taken over. The patience and tangibility are lost and with it, so is the interaction with others. "This is why, I have decided to put together a collection of furniture that will use these neglected games, these incomplete puzzles, to create something new and complete." Manual Photography Cheat Sheet Wow, how pretty is this? Whether you're a beginner photographer or just someone who likes to reminded of the basics, we think you'll appreciate this Manual Photography Cheat Sheet by Miguel Yatco. Why did he create it? "Well, the main reason I made this infographic was so that I could help beginners get a better idea of how the manual mode of a camera works," he tells us. "A lot of people ask me about my settings, and honestly, I wasn't so sure on how to help them out. "There's one of the basics in the cheat sheet that I really want to get into, and that's the first tab on the cheat sheet, which is the Exposure. It's so sweet-looking, couldn't you just imagine it hanging on your wall? In case you were wondering, Miguel Yatco is an 18 year old self-taught photographer based in Manila, Philippines. Update: One day after we posted this infographic, Miguel told us that on Tumblr it's now gotten about 1000+ notes and that it's getting even more exposure because of My Modern Met.
