Food for Life. European Technology Platform European Technology Platforms (ETPs) are industry-led, public/private partnerships encouraged by the European Commission to drive innovation and unite stakeholder communities in reaching strategic research objectives of key European industry sectors. The main goals of the ETPs are to strengthen the European innovation process, improve knowledge transfer and stimulate European competitiveness across the food chain. ETP was created in 2005 under the auspices of the Confederation of the food and drink Industry of the EU (CIAA), following the principles of the Lisbon Strategy. ETP addresses innovation in the agri-food sector, which is the largest manufacturing sector within the EU. The ETP represents a unique opportunity for all stakeholders in the European food chain to increase their competitive strength and to safeguard the continued well-being and welfare of consumers across Europe.

Now QR Codes Can Generate Likes On Facebook Technology that brings together the real world and the virtual world of Facebook seems to be becoming the next big thing. Last week Facebook launched its location check-in service Places. Yesterday we wrote about a Coca-Cola festival in Israel where teenagers could ‘like’ attractions on Facebook by waving RFID bracelets. And today, we bring you news of real-world ‘liking’ via a QR code and a mobile phone. QR stands for ‘quick response’ and it’s a type of barcode with an encoded URL. Mobile marketing company Macanudos, based in Motril near Granada, Spain, has developed a system that will allow users to ‘like’ physical objects – from a press article or a poster announcing a performance to a restaurant – using a QR code. Gabriel Medina, head of Macanudos, said: “Our business idea is about looking for new concepts and applications that serve as a bridge between the physical and digital -known as the” internet of things ” – … using the phone in this process.”

EFSA. Cooperation with networks and partners The European Food Safety Authority is the keystone of European Union risk assessment regarding food and feed safety. To accomplish its mission, EFSA works closely with partners and stakeholders, and is a proactive member of important networks. Partners include institutions with whom the Authority has a legal obligation to work with under EU rules specifically risk managers working within the European Commission, the European Parliament and the Member States, and stakeholder groups and individuals or groups who feel they can contribute to the Authority’s work. An example of this is the EFSA Advisory Forum which brings together the national food safety authorities of all 28 EU Member States, Iceland and Norway. Another example is the EFSA stakeholder consultative platform which brings together EU-wide stakeholder organisations working in areas related to the food chain. EFSA also organises and participates in many events annually on scientific topics within its mandate. Further information
