By Howie DiBlasi04/23/12 Where did the time go? Four years ago, I retired from the Durango School District in Durango, CO. I recently returned from a 10-day tour that took me to three conferences in three states, and I have had some time to reflect on my observations on the changes in educational technology. The importance of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) is a popular topic at conferences. Attending one of my workshops will challenge you to think differently, and apply that to real-world problems. Objective: Build a new attraction at a "Disney World" Resort Park.

The Very First App You Should Load on Your New iPad I am often asked by new iPad owners which apps they should install first. That’s a tough question as it all depends on each individual and how they want to use their new device. There are literally hundreds of lists out there about the best iPad apps — especially since a lot of those are year-end lists. So, instead of sending all these lists — I’m not going to mention any of them here — simply because all you have to do is search for “Best iPad Apps” on your favorite search engine — try an app called AppStart! AppStart is a great app for finding the apps that fits your needs. For an introduction to AppStart, take a look at the short video in the upper-right hand corner of this post. Smarter Learning 107 Favorite iPad Apps for K-8–Plus 1 Click for more information OK–I left one app off the list of 107 Favorite iPad Apps published earlier this week. It’s called Murky Reef. It’s advertised as ‘a series of thematic educational apps that encourages critical thinking through contextual game play’ and includes specific apps for language, science, and different grade levels. One thing I particularly like about this app is that it’s designed with Bloom’s Taxonomy in mind–those quintessential characteristics of effective learning. There are 7 apps in the Murky Reef series. A rattlesnake double take and taking responsibility for my classroom This morning's daily challenge on Twitter was to walk outside. I try to do the challenges I give all of you (they are real, I write them as much for myself as for you to work on the things that are important), so this morning, I decided to walk with Mom, Dad and the dogs on the farm. I admit that I didn't go barefooted because it was a 2 mile walk, although in a bit,I am going to walk outside barefooted back here at home. Just about 10 minutes after I took the photo of the five dogs that chose to accompany us, as I was watching for the rattlesnake that my Aunt Nan killed this morning on her walk, I almost stepped on it... or I thought it was the rattlesnake she killed. "Oh there is the snake that..." my words trailed off as I realized that this snake's tongue was flicking in and out of its mouth. Oh dear. "That is a live rattlesnake!" What a close call! Then, I thought to myself. Our world is chock full of people who will not accept responsibility. How does this relate to education? Think.

CT Valley Views earns state grant - Granby - Foothills Media Group GRANBY — CT Valley Views has received a Connecticut Public, Educational and Governmental Programming and Educational Technology Investment Account (PEGPETIA) Grant to purchase video and audio equipment. Program Host Susan Regan notes that this award further validates the diversity and value of their public access show series and the contribution to Connecticut and its communities. CTVV has recently received national video awards for two program episodes, “Evil in Our Midst-Child Trafficking” and “Hill-Stead Museum Part 1: The Legacy.” According to Producer Bill Regan, new high definition widescreen cameras, teleprompter and wireless audio will significantly add to the production quality of the upcoming program schedule. “Having this equipment readily available will enable us to schedule events as they happen and book interviews on our timetable,” he said. “It is through their support that our program reached the level of success it has thus far,” said Regan. WhatBird | identify birds | bird identification guide | north am Blooms and iPad Applications I just got tweeted a nice diagram showing iPad applications against different levels of Bloom’s revised taxonomy. Its a good and well considered diagram and I like it. Some applications there that I haven’t seen yet and I will have to look up. The only thing I would say is that the applications are just the medium in which the student demonstrates the level. They facilitate the cognitive action. – This is NOT a criticism, rather a statement from me and one I know that Kathy Schrock has definitely taken into account. I know a number of people who have questioned whether tools like animoto should be included because it can be so easy, but the reality is yes you can “throw” music and images at Animoto and get a good product. Tools like Pages and Touch Draw can be used across the taxonomic levels depending on the task and purpose. Nice work and thanks for sharing
