Perhaps The Copyright Industry Deserves Some Credit For Pointing Out Our Single Points Of Failure Through new legislation the copyright industry is trying to gain unprecedented control over the Internet. Very worrying plans that need to be stopped, but there is also something to learn from. Perhaps we should be grateful that the copyright industry, in their distorted sense of entitlement to the world, are pointing out crucial weaknesses that need to be fixed. Yesterday’s column here on TorrentFreak on how the copyright industry keeps pushing its own interests into law was very worthwhile, and highlighted the endemic corruption of the current system quite well. This latest bill in the United States, named SOPA (a Swedish word meaning “piece of utter garbage”, and I am not making that up), would essentially eliminate due process of law and right to defense. Here’s how it is intended to work: The copyright industry gains the right to “notify” payment processors such as Visa that a company looks bad. You will note that everybody in the proposed system is completely rightsless.

The list of ISP’s that limit BitTorrent traffic, or plan to do so is growing every day, and according to the BBC, the ‘bandwidth war’ has begun. Unlock Root Roots Nearly 250 Android Devices in One Click [UPDATED] I can't tell whether you're being sarcastic or not. This was a really tough one. I don't like the way this app does a lot of things. If its code was indeed stolen, I'd like to know from whom, and how—how does one steal code if something is closed source? That said, it worked for me and it's ridiculously simple to use. What I'd really like to see is this app become a bit more "legitimate", if the stolen code claim is true (and if the 250+ phones claim is true), since the community could probably really use something like this. Though there IS something to be said about rooting becoming so easy that people no longer understand what they're doing, and cause more problems because of it. No sarcasm... Yeah, the potential for bricking alone makes me think that rooting should be difficult. I really don't think bricking is as prevalent as people think it is.

10 things in your car you didn't know you could fix The complexity of modern vehicles makes some projects a no-go for newbies, veteran Portsmouth, R.I., mechanic Paul Roderick says. Don't try to replace fuel or water pumps (because of their inaccessibility) or the shoes in drum brakes (because of their mechanical intricacy) unless you really know what you're doing, and "forget about electrical problems, unless the problem is a blown fuse." But, Roderick says, there are still plenty of auto DIY projects, like these, for weekend warriors. Changing Disc Brake Pads Changing worn-out disc brake pads is a straightforward job. When it's time to change the pads, make sure you have jack stands, basic hand tools, and a C-clamp (to push the caliper piston into its cylinder) on hand. Replacing the Alternator In most cars, a warning light will tell you when the alternator is dying. To do the job, you'll need wrenches, including a socket wrench. Replacing the Oxygen Sensor Replacing the Idle-Air-Control Valve or Sensor Changing Headlight Bulbs

2011: Striking Pirates and Stopping SOPA During the second half of the year SOPA dominated much of the news, but of course there were plenty of other interesting things going on too. Below is a selection of some of the most remarkable topics covered here on TorrentFreak in the latter part of 2011. Part 1 (covering the first 6 months of the year) can be found here. Feel free to add your assessment of the last year in the comments section below. July BitTorrent had its 10th birthday at the start of July, and inventor Bram Cohen was kind enough to share his thoughts on the past decade with us. In the same month the MPAA, RIAA and all major ISPs in the US announced a deal to curb piracy with a six-strikes warning system. Around the same time, the French authorities provided some details on the scope of their three-strikes law, Hadopi. Yet another ruling (final this time) confirmed that ‘pirate’ sites operate lawfully in Spain. Oh, and sadly enough file-sharers were denied official religion status in Sweden. When I start up Windows in 1920x1080 (1080p) portions of the screen are cut off and I can't view them on my DLP HDTV. This is called overscan mode and is a common mode for DLP televisions set by the HDTV manufacturer. Some televisions have a built in mode called "Reduce" which allows you to view the entire Windows desktop, but this mode is not compatible with stereoscopic 3D gaming. However, NVIDIA has a Resize HDTV function available in the NVIDIA control panel which allows users to view the entire Windows desktop and is compatible with 3D stereoscopic gaming. To enable it, follow these instructions: The options on this Resize HDTV Desktop page appear if you have set the NVIDIA Control Panel View menu to Standard. You can resize the desktop appearing on your HDTV screen if your desktop is extending beyond the viewable display area or the desktop or image is not filling the entire display area. 1.From the NVIDIA Control Panel navigation tree pane, under Video & Television, click Resize HDTV desktop to open the associated page. 2.Click the Resize Desktop button.

How to Be an Audiophile on the Cheap This is a terrific post. It's such a bummer to see people brush off "audiophiles" because they think quality sound is out of their price range. Even for people uncomfortable with DIY solutions, like myself, relatively cheap, superb audio is extremely possible. If you do your research you shouldn't have any trouble building an incredible system from scratch (receiver, source, speakers and cables) for well under $1,500. I've just gotten hooked by cheap audiophilia myself, so I thought I'd share some of my findings: Stereophile's "The Entry Level" Column: [www.stereophile.com] Stephen Mejias write a terrific monthly column about his experience ditching his expensive gear to try out notable cheaper equipment. CNET's Audiophiliac Blog: www.cnet.com/audiophiliac This covers a lot of pricey gear, but also hits on great budget components a lot. If you're going the vinyl route, you can't go wrong with the Musical Fidelity V-LPS phono preamp for $99. Marantz PM 5004 ($450) Record Player: CD Player:

Small But Powerful: 30 Useful Apps Under 2MB - Page 1 SpaceSniffer is so much nicer than WinDirStat in my opinion, faster and more helpful. I love it. Everything search engine is also quite amazing, so fast. I only wish there was a way to replace Windows search with it. I've been using CCleaner since probably 2006/2007. uTorrent of course is a favorite :D I could never understand why BitTorrent was like 10MB when uTorrent was 200kb and had more features than BitTorrent does. 7zip is great, I recently downloaded an item customizer for it, it's much nicer to use now. I think ColorCop is a pretty nice program, I'd been using Pixie by Nattyware since then. Hamachi is great, many uses all around. I recently used Memtest86 and found out one of my 2GB modules was not fried, it was only the other one. I haven't had a chance to try Greenshot yet, but it sounds great. I never got f.lux to work, maybe thats because I was using it in a VM though. Edit: The VM was causing it not to work. Just my opinons anyway :D

2011: Piracy Wars and Internet Censorship At the end of the year when new developments draw to a close, it’s time to take a look back and take stock. Below is our overview of some of the most interesting events we reported during the first half of 2011. Take a deep breath… January After pressure from the entertainment industries, Google started to censor piracy-related keywords from its instant and autocomplete services. Despite these efforts the RIAA remained dissatisfied, patronizing the search engine with a could-do-much-better “Report Card” in December. The mass-BitTorrent lawsuits that entered the US during 2010 reached a new milestone in 2011 with the 100,000th person being sued for alleged copyright infringement. One alleged BitTorrent user paid a mysterious settlement of $250,000. There was also positive news from the UK, when so-called Speculative Invoicing schemes there came to an end, at least for a few months. Meanwhile, RapidShare and Megaupload fought back against entertainment industry propaganda. February March April

Scammers Try To Trick Cash From Surprised ‘File-Sharers’ With hundreds of thousands of warnings already sent out, chances are that soon most French Internet users will know someone who has received one. Unsurprisingly, scammers are now riding the wave of publicity and uncertainty by sending out fake Hadopi emails which trick users into requesting more information about their 'infringements' which cost them money. Since October 2010, the French government agency set up to police the country’s file-sharers have been busy sending out infringement warnings. By early September 2011, ISP account holders on their first strike from Hadopi had swelled to 650,000, while those on their second numbered 44,000. If Hadopi carry on at the current rate, by this time next year around one in 20 households in France will have received at least one warning, and it could be argued that most people will be aware of someone near to them having received one. Internet users have just started receiving emails which claim to be from Hadopi.
