Facebook settles privacy complaint with FTC Facebook has settled a sweeping privacy complaint in the US after the Federal Trade Commission accused the company of deceiving its users by failing to honour promises to keep their personal information private. The agreement, announced on Tuesday, brings to a head the simmering complaints stirred up in the wake of changes the social networking company made two years ago to the way it handles information about its more than 800m users. Mark Zuckerberg, chief executive, defended Facebook’s overall handling of its users’ personal information in a blog post published after the settlement was announced, although he added: “I’m the first to admit that we’ve made a bunch ofmistakes.” Among a “small number of high-profile mistakes”, he added, were the launch four years ago of Beacon, an advertising system that reported users’ purchases to their Facebook contacts, and the series of changes in 2009 that affected the privacy settings of all Facebook users.

to Study Data Broker Industry’s Collection and Use of Consumer Data The Federal Trade Commission issued orders requiring nine data brokerage companies to provide the agency with information about how they collect and use data about consumers. The agency will use the information to study privacy practices in the data broker industry. Data brokers are companies that collect personal information about consumers from a variety of public and non-public sources and resell the information to other companies. In many ways, these data flows benefit consumers and the economy; for example, having this information about consumers enables companies to prevent fraud. Data brokers also provide data to enable their customers to better market their products and services. The nine data brokers receiving orders from the FTC are: 1) Acxiom, 2) Corelogic, 3) Datalogix, 4) eBureau, 5) ID Analytics, 6) Intelius, 7) Peekyou, 8) Rapleaf, and 9) Recorded Future. The Commission vote to approve issuing the orders was 5-0. (FTC File No.

We've spent a lot of time this past year trying to understand how the National Security Agency gathers and stores information about ordinary people. But there's also a thriving public marketfor data on individual Americans—especially data about the things we buy and might want to buy. Consumer data companies are scooping up huge amountsof consumer information about people around the world and selling it, providing marketers details about whether you're pregnant or divorced or trying to lose weight, about how rich you are and what kinds of cars you drive. The Federal Trade Commission is pushing the companies to give consumers more information and control over what happens to their data. It's very hard to tell who is collecting or sharing your data—or what kinds of information companies are collecting. Here's a look at what we know—and what we don't—about the consumer data industry. Actually, they do.

Exploring value exchange: Can we put a price on data? - Mycustomer.com Are your customers aware of the value of their data and their role in a value exchange model? And if not, should they be? In the first article of this series we discussed the existence of a value exchange, and the ambition of brand marketers to elevate their relationship with consumers from a commercial to an emotional one. What is clear is that wherever a particular brand is on this journey; information and data are critical elements in helping them understand customers. But are consumers conscious of their role in a value exchange model, or indeed of the inherent value of their data? On paper, the value exchange model itself creates a fair balance between what is entered into the exchange – customer insight – and the resulting outcome for the customer, whether that’s a commercial reward or an emotional experience.
