The group has set up a sophisticated daylighting laboratory with, among other, a scanning sky simulator and an automated heliodon, which allow reproducing with very high precision all daylight conditions that exist around the world. Recently, research related to visual and non-visual aspects of light on human physiology and behavior has been carried out under the supervision of research associate Dr Mirjam Münch, who set up a photobiological laboratory with different light sources for this purpose. The push toward sustainable design increased in the 1990s with the creation of Building Research Establishment's Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM), the first green building rating system in the U.K. Green product standards also began to appear in the marketplace in the 1980s and increased in the 1990s. There is now a proliferation of standards, rating, and certification programs in the marketplace to help guide, demonstrate, and document efforts to deliver sustainable, high-performance buildings.
