Ghost Billboard Erected on U.S.-Canada Border | Underwire By Duncan Geere, Wired UK A U.S. art studio called Lead Pencil Studio has created a sculpture on the border between the United States and Canada that consists of a blank space in the shape of a billboard, surrounded by tangled metal. Titled Non-Sign II, the piece was commissioned by the U.S. government. The artists behind it are Annie Han and Daniel Mihalyo, who’ve won numerous awards for their work over the last decade. The pair carefully twisted metal to give the appearance of a ghost of one of the billboards that populate the area. Han and Mihalyo told The Stranger that they hope the sculpture will add a bit of awareness to the signage landscape in the border zone, as it flies past the inhabitants of passing cars. The work was funded by the U.S. government’s Art in Architecture program. Photo: Lead Pencil Studio See Also:
NESTREST Doesn't that picture look so peaceful and inviting? I think I'm in love. That dangling, serene little pod is a NESTREST, designed by Paris' Daniel Pouzet and Fred Frety. It's described as an over-sized bird's nest that's perfect for relaxation, meditation and open-air conversations. Graffiti Analysis Spectacular and See-Through: Dude, Where's My Canoe? | Designs &Id... Glass-bottom boats are nothing new on scenic tours, but with a see-through canoe you can go wherever you want and have a personal up-close view of whatever is below you. Lighter than a wood or aluminum canoe, tough as bullet-proof glass and entirely transparent on the bottom, these designs provide a completely new way to experience water life around you. It gets better: the kayak equivalent to the transparent canoe is a carbon kevlar frame design that has a military-grade transparent urethane skin – and it folds up small enough to carry with you in a backpack. Setting it up to be water-worthy takes about a half an hour but the lightweight portability means you can bring it virtually anywhere. Whether you choose the canoe or kayak these are both ideal for wide ranging travels and potentially challenging water conditions as well as brief vacation jaunts.

Everyday Objects Stash Money, Secrets, Drugs, IDs Yiting Cheng just finished up a master's degree in design, but she could already teach James Bond a thing or two about stashing valuables. For her thesis project, Cheng designed a series of eight objects that ingeniously store secrets--from passwords to money to drugs to IDs. And you can see all of them in this nicely shot video (our favorite is the secrete drawer, hidden in the edge of a table, which is only accessible when attach a magnetic pull): According to Cheng: This project is about concealing valuables, secrets, bad habits and personal information in our workplaces. In other words, she hides things in plain sight, by hiding them inside objects so familiar that you'd never question their integrity.

Patchwork Orange: Art of Fixing Buildings with LEGO Blocks A missing brick here and chipped stone there show the normal marks of wear and tear on the structures and streets of a city, but filling them in with multi-colored LEGO bricks makes them stand out in sharp relief with their surroundings – especially in a place like Berlin. Titled ‘Dispatchwork’ (a linguistic play on ‘dispatching’ and ‘patching’ the holes), this is part urban art installation, part historical highlighting (since many of the gaps date back to World War II) and part method of calling attention to buildings that could use some help. Jan Vormann has been toying with LEGO pieces for a long time in various artistic capacities – as well as infilling structural holes with mirrors and other attention-getting materials. It may look haphazard at first, but there is an art to the process: identifying gaps is naturally subjective, and filling them in is both a creative and crafty act that can involve turning corners and working with existing structural details.
