Consumers have taken their time falling out of love with OTAs, and just as long becoming comfortable with the newer meta-search model. That’s understandable. The new model involves spending time on one site to search and discover, and on a second to complete the actual booking. That seems like a step backwards from the OTA’s one-stop shop, and explains why the change has been so gradual. Now Rome2rio is taking the popular meta-search concept one step further, by searching across all types of transport—not just air—and allowing users to build door-to-door journey plans that include transport, accommodation and attractions. For a user, the differences can be profound. Rod Cuthbert Written by Rod Cuthbert
Multi-Modal in Europe: a wrap-up - Rome2rio I’ve just returned from Berlin, where I gave a presentation on the state of the multi-modal sector at the annual ITB Conference. Being in Europe was a good opportunity to meet some of the companies I talked about in person, and get a better handle on how and why they’re taking the course they’re on. My presentation is online and viewable here, but it’s boring without the text. So here’s an overview of what I said about the various players, with the addition of what I learned afterwards as I met with some of them and heard their opinions on where the market is headed. SNCF-Mytripset I met the Mytripset team in Paris at the SNCF Headquarters. Waymate I met with founders Maxim Nohroudi and Tom Kirschbaum at Waymate’s very central, very fine offices in Berlin, and found myself in the middle of a company that had recently split itself in two, though in a good way. Political and geographic complexity in multi-modal search - Rome2rio We have blogged previously about two interesting challenges that present themselves when you get into the nitty-gritty of building a multi-modal search system: 1) Detecting landmasses. Accurate routing needs to be aware of landmasses and islands, and what is connected to what by land, road, ferry and air. This is critical for finding all possible routes between points, and what combination of ferries and flights will make that connection possible. 2) Political borders. Certain borders cannot be easily crossed; suggesting a driving route from South Korea to North Korea is both unrealistic and an embarrassing user experience. Similar complexities exist in places such as Israel, Pakistan, and Afghanistan. Political data is also important for displaying accurate place names in our geocoder system. This week we launched significant improvements to the accuracy of our internal system for detecting both landmasses and political regions. Miles learnt a few interesting facts in the process:
returns to present at PhoCusWright 2013 - Rome2rio Rome2rio made its annual pilgrimage to the PhoCusWright conference again this year. For our CEO, Rod, it was his 15th year attending the event! It was my second time. Once again, I took the stage at the Travel Innovation Summit and gave an update of this year’s progress. Watch the presentation here: [youtube Rome2rio received plenty of mentions during the event, and I was impressed just how well known and loved Rome2rio was among attendees. Multi-modal search was a bit of a hot topic at this year’s innovation summit. No doubt you’ll see us again at next year’s PhoCusWright in Los Angeles. Written by Michael Cameron Co-founder & CEO team continues to grow - Rome2rio Three new staff have joined the Rome2rio team in the past month. We’re thrilled to welcome to the team: Rodney O’Donnell: Rodney joins our development team with plenty of experience in search and big data problems. All up we’ve now got 8 full-time staff working out of Inspire9 in the Melbourne suburb of Richmond. Written by Michael Cameron Co-founder & CEO
Manually collected route data proves popular with users - Rome2rio While much of the data we collect and manage to support our mission of “organising the world’s transport information” is available electronically, an important slice of that data is not. What’s interesting is the inverse relationship between that hard-to-get data and user demand for journey plans that include “manual” routes. The following graphics examine: (a) our data collection efforts, dividing routes between those collected automatically and those collected manually; and (b) user searches on the rome2rio.com website, divided between users clicking on a result that was collected electronically, versus clicking on a result that was collected manually: In many ways this analysis is not surprising: routes between popular, heavily trafficked locations are more likely to be well known — and thus searched on less often — and more likely to be available to us electronically. We’re going to France. But not really. - Rome2rio Rome2rio is presenting a paper at the upcoming La Rochelle Mobility Forum conference in La Rochelle, France. (Actually, we’re not. Our friend Veronique Seel, who is the integrated mobility projects coordinator at EIGSI in La Rochelle and one of the conference organisers, is making the presentation our behalf, and Michael will appear briefly on video. Image courtesy Fred Le Lan The forum is part of the www.climatlanticproject.eu project, aimed at fostering the development of strategies at regional and local levels to reduce the carbon footprint in the European Atlantic Area. The February 2014 forum will focus on local and regional carbon footprint reduction as a mobility priority, and provide insights into existing and future trends in interregional mobility. If you are interested in journey planning and “mobility” this is a great opportunity to meet and hear from a wide variety of experts in the front lines of European thinking on the topic.
