Growing up India, and specializing in film at a design school started by Ray and Charles Eames, I have been hugely influenced by a number of notable image-makers and storytellers who worked to create radical visions of the future. Datavisualization.ch At long last, we have documented trips on Citi Bike. Rides are displayed as point-to-point journeys (not routed in the street grid – yet) and are rendered in color based on whether the rider was an annual or casual user. This visualization was produced using journey data from Tuesday, September 17th at 12 midnight and Wednesday, September 18th at midnight. The weather was mild, with highs in the 60s and lows in the 50s. Some points to watch: > Port Authority, Grand Central and Penn Station rushes at 6am > Post-work leisure rides > Transit delays throughout the day (taken from MTA's feed) > Heavy annual member use in Brooklyn > Tourist rides on Central Park and the Brooklyn Bridge > Stations along the FDR during morning commute > Long trips from Brooklyn to the Upper East Side > Casual users surging in mid afternoons > Riding pairs throughout, but especially noticeable in the afternoons and right after midnight > Heavy post-midnight travel in Brooklyn

Flavorwire As you already know, The Avengers is pretty much already the people’s choice movie of the year, and has inspired all manner of pop culture tributes in recent months, from the relatively high brow to the delightfully low brow. Well, here’s just one more for you to add to the list, and it comes with a bonus — in addition to being a charming idea, these cute Avengers-themed cocktails, created by the genius mind (and great illustrator) behind The More I Arty, actually look pretty delicious. And hey, a sampling of your favorite before you go see the film in 3-d might just improve the experience. [via Pop Chart Lab]

Themes | SOCAP: Designing the Future (Malmö, Sweden) The following are the core themes that will be covered at SOCAP: Designing the Future. What are the best creative market-based solutions to the complex, interconnected issues of youth unemployment, immigrant inclusion and providing for the needs of a growing aging population? A new kind of investment fund is teaching skills, creating jobs, and funding new enterprises for youth and immigrants. The economy of the future will have to work for both people and the planet; dissolving siloed approaches that focus only on the planet or only on social problems. Throughout Europe, public funding is drying up. Getting to the future we want requires social enterprise to grow fast enough and large enough to meet the challenges of the future; to scale at the pace of the world’s problems.

Lean With It: People Photographed Leaning at Impossible Angles with Trees Chicago photographer Paul Octavious has just released a number of new photos as part of his Lean With It series, where he captures people bending (I suspect falling) in parallel with precariously angled trees. It’s almost more amazing that he’s able to find these trees in the first place, let alone timing such great shots. See much more on his website.

About | SOCAP: Designing the Future (Malmö, Sweden) May 8-10th, 2012 join the world’s leading social impact innovators for SOCAP: Designing the Future. Designing the Future gathers the world’s pioneering Impact Investors, social entrepreneurs, philanthropists, government and civic leaders, and innovators to design a world that’s better for all. Together, we will create the intersections where you will meet not just the people you know, but valuable strangers with whom you will create new models, form partnerships and drive capital to support the enterprises that will shape the future we want. We are convening at Malmö University, in Malmö, Sweden (An easy 20-minute train ride from the Copenhagen Airport). Malmö is Sweden’s third largest city and located just 20 minutes from Northern Europe’s largest airport Kastrup. In 2006 Malmö was certified as Sweden’s first Fair-trade City which has spurred the city’s organic and fair trade offerings. What makes SOCAP different? SOCAP: Designing the Future will explore:

FlowingData | Data Visualization, Infographics, and Statistics New Robot Crawls Like an Earthworm Dubbed the "Meshworm," a new bio-inspired robot stretches and contracts to crawl across the ground like an earthworm. But unlike its living, breathing counterpart, this artificial creature is durable enough to survive being bludgeoned by a hammer. "You can throw it, and it won't collapse. Most mechanical parts are rigid and fragile at small scale, but the parts in Meshworms are all fibrous and flexible," said mechanical engineering researcher Sangbae Kim in a statement from MIT. "The muscles are soft, and the body is soft … we're starting to show some body-morphing capability." Earthworms have two muscle groups in their bodies that work together to help it move on the ground. The researchers tried to imitate this structure for their robot. A small battery and circuit board was added to the tube to produce a current to heat the wires at certain segments along the body. Though small, the Meshworm is durable.
