How to use Google advanced search Advanced search not only helps you find what you want in record speed, it can also help uncover some great networking opportunities. Many of us are familiar with how we can manipulate Google’s results with quotation marks and negative symbols, for example: apple -mac but that’s not the whole story. By combining these functions you can find products within your price range, research competing websites, and gather guest blogging opportunities. To get started we’ll look at building an advanced shopping query to really hone in on what you’re looking for.

My new Ubuntu-flavoured ThinkPad is computing heaven This week, I finally got my new Lenovo ThinkPad X220, the latest and skinniest in the Lenovo X-series of fast, skinny, rugged, all-black, no-nonsense machines. This – my third X-series ThinkPad – is shaping up to be everything I expected from the line and more: it is slim, 2.5cm (1in), configured with its smallest battery and very light – 1.5kg (3lbs 4oz) or so; size up to the biggest battery and you get eight or nine hours of work at a mere 1.8kg; snap on the "Slice" battery, which snugly fits underneath the machine, fattening it up to 4cm, and the weight goes to 2.5 kg – but the Slice delivers about 24 hours of continuous operation without plugging in. I haven't yet taken the machine on the road, but 24 hours' worth of battery means that I'll be able to leave my mains adapter at home for the next all-day conference or travel day, which saves weight overall. My ThinkPad switch was inspired by a desire to try out the Ubuntu flavour of GNU/Linux, which I'd heard great things about.

For many people, Ubuntu has become synonymous with Linux. But Ubuntu is one of many distros, and you have a lot of choice when it comes to Linux. What is a Linux Distro, Anyway?

The definitive guide to proprietary AMD graphics drivers This tutorial was completely valid for Squeeze, and was written in a time when I had both an AMD card and Debian as my OS of choice. I no longer have either one of them, so while the methods will probably work, I have no way of checking. If someone wants to take over, I'll gladly offer what little assistance I can offer.Terminology radeon - this is the open source driver for 99 percent of the cards. It does 2D and 3D, KMS, is extremely stable, works out of the box for pretty much everything once you install the package firmware-linux-nonfree. It has crappy power management, so it runs about 10 degrees Celsius hotter than the proprietary driver. radeonhd - this is the older version of the open source driver.

Find is a beautiful tool I have blogged before that knowledge of command-line tools is essential to take the next step in programming productivity. I think it would be useful to provide simple tutorials for these powerful tools, starting with find. Tutorial If you’re on Windows, I would recommend installing Cygwin to bring the power of a real shell to your OS. Let us start with a simple example and build upon it:
