Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park

Loch Lomond and the Trossachs Select area The new Loch Lomond National Park has ensured protection for what is not only Britain's largest freshwater lake, but one of its most beautiful, celebrated in ballad and song. West of Loch Lomond are the steep Arrochar Alps towering above Loch Long together with scores of much less visited lower hills stretching down to the seaboard. To the east is the Trossachs - a delightful landscape of forests, lochs and hills that has long been known as Scotland in miniature. The variety means that there are routes catering for walking at all levels of ability, from easy rambles for the family, through longer, strenous hikes to ascents of the major Munros. Robert Burns References to Loch Lomond and Dumbarton Local Burns lovers have always delighted in relating the tale of Rabbie's journey through the district, when he was made freeman of Dumbarton and received his Burgess Ticket. I had heard references to his night on Loch Lomondside and his ill-fated race with a local "Highlandman" down the lochside on his horse, Jenny Geddes. I often wondered how much truth there was in this story. I then read the actual letter he had written to one of his old friends, James Smith, recounting the story. It seems that we made Rabbie very welcome - perhaps a wee bit too welcome! In this first letter he had just left the then new town of Inveraray and stopped off at Arrochar. WHOE'ER he be that sojourns here, I pity much his case, Unless he comes to wait upon The Lord their God, His Grace. If it's any consolation to our friends over in Inveraray, the above verses were written after he had been rejected as a guest of the Duke of Argyll at the recently built Inveraray Castle. To MR. ARROCHAR, 28th June 1787.

Loch Lomond Loch Lomond (/ˈlɒxˈloʊmənd/; Scottish Gaelic Loch Laomainn) is a freshwater Scottish loch which crosses the Highland Boundary Fault. It is the largest inland stretch of water in Great Britain by surface area.[1] The loch contains many islands, including Inchmurrin, the largest fresh-water island in the British Isles.[2] Loch Lomond is a popular leisure destination and is featured in song. Geography[edit] Loch Lomond is a freshwater loch lying on the Highland Boundary Fault, often considered the boundary between the lowlands of Central Scotland and the Highlands. It is 39 kilometres (24 mi) long and between 1.21 kilometres (0.75 mi) and 8 kilometres (5.0 mi) wide. Traditionally a boundary between Stirlingshire and Dunbartonshire, Loch Lomond is currently split between the council areas of Stirling, Argyll and Bute, and West Dunbartonshire. Loch Lomond is now part of Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park. Islands[edit] English travel writer, H.V. Leisure activities[edit] The song[edit]

Visit Fort William - Loch Lomond Islands Loch Lomond Information Loch Lomond is 18 miles long and 4½ miles wide at the broadest point. The deepest point is 630 feet. The Loch, especially at its southern end is dotted with a host of islands of all shapes and sizes. There are about sixty islands in total, depending on the water level as some will disappear as the water rises whilst others only appear at very low water levels. All of the islands are owned by someone! If you visit any of the islands, remember that the country code applies here on the islands just as on the mainland. should be respected. Having said all that, when you visit any of the islands, enjoy the seclusion, the peace and the sometimes interesting ruins of houses, castles and religous buildings which are to be found on many of these islands. There are too many islands in the loch to describe all of them so I will describe (in alphabetical order) the most important and most interesting. Right to Roam??
