Here, I’d like to point out a new tool that builds on that notion. Even on the infinitely measurable web, gauging engagement remains a tricky and largely elusive task. One popular measure is the bounce rate, or percentage of visitors who leave after seeing one page. The Huffington Post, despite its surging popularity, has said the site’s bounce rate is too high, which hurts the value of its advertising. Another metric is return readership.

It's the authenci With all due respect, I wouldn’t put Vin Diesel in the upper echelon of movie actors. But on Facebook, the Fast & Furious star is second to none among the Hollywood elite. He’s currently adding hundreds of thousands of fans daily, and with more than 3.4 million of them at the moment, the only person bigger than Diesel on Facebook is President Obama. How’s he doing it? Simple: authenticity. It’s really one of the first lessons you hear over and over again when talking about marketing your brand in social media – whether it’s a company or a person – but so many stars still put their brand in the hands of professional managers on sites like Facebook, MySpace, and Twitter. Diesel appears to have been doing this too – up until about a month ago when his updates went from standard fare – clips of TV appearances and an event schedule – to authentic updates and interaction from the star.

expert-tweet-helps-you-find-experts-on-twitter/ The Journalistics team was sitting around a couple of months ago, talking about the various apps out there for Twitter, and applications of Twitter technologies for PR and marketing uses. As part of a larger project we’re working on behind the scenes, we started brainstorming about faster ways to find experts on Twitter, beyond searching keywords, scouring directories or scanning #followfriday shout-outs. Of course, any Twitter user can tweet an expert request to their followers, but depending on how you use Twitter, the size of your following, or your expert need, your followers might not have a suggestion for you. Or your followers might miss your tweet all together, resulting in no responses. Even with 6,000 or so followers for @journalistics, we still only get a suggestion or two when we pose a question to our followers.

7 FBML examples to rock your Facebook fan page. Facebook markup language or FBML for short is used in a variety of places within the social network. Anyone who has written any Facebook applications will already be pretty familiar with its tags, and will probably have used it to write data to walls, or share postings with others programmatically. If however you haven’t yet dipped your toe in the water of the Facebook API, or indeed haven’t actually needed to – there are some snippets of FBML which prove to be mighty useful when creating custom Facebook Fan Pages, and can easily and quickly out of the box be used with the FBML widget, which adds an extra much needed layer of customisation to an existing Facebook fan page. The static FBML widget can be added multiple times, and in multiple places (sidebar and tabs) to facilitate this. Once you’ve added it to your page, simply go to “edit page”, then under Applications click “edit” under Static FBML.

How to “friend” someone on Facebook & hide it from your stat I’m sure that this has happened to you before. Someone you have ties to, whether it’s a co-worker, your boss, or even worse, a parent, has finally discovered social networking and wants to be your newest Facebook friend. For me personally, that’s no big deal. I’m fairly open about my online activities. Everything I write, Digg, or otherwise share goes through my FriendFeed to my Twitter then ultimately onto my Facebook (my, that sounds naughty). 70 Percent of Journalists Use Social Networks to Assist Reportin According to a new survey from Middleberg Communications and the Society for New Communications Research (SNCR), as reported in PRWeek , 70 percent of journalists said they use social networks to assist in reporting (compared to 41 percent last year). This is a huge spike in one year, though it shouldn’t surprise any of us with all the lists of journalists using Twitter and other social networks. The survey also found that 69 percent of respondents go to company websites to assist in their reporting, while 66 percent use blogs, 51 percent use Wikipedia (wow), 48 percent go to online videos (double wow), and 47 percent use Twitter and other microblogging services (would have guessed higher on this one). A big part of this shift has to revolve around journalists having less help to do their jobs, while being required to produce more content across various formats in near real-time. When it comes to Twitter, 57 percent of journalists found this social medium to be credible.
