Alors qu’ils entraient sur le secteur final, il vit le coureur kenyan – vainqueur certain de la course – sortir par erreur de la piste 10 m avant la ligne de finish, pensant qu’il avait déjà franchi la ligne. Fernández Anaya le rattrapa rapidement, puis au lieu d’exploiter l’erreur de Mutai en le dépassant et en prétendant à une victoire qui était incertaine, il resta derrière et, par des gestes, il guida le kenyan vers la ligne et le laissa la franchir en premier. Iván Fernández Anaya, coureur Basque de 24 ans, vu comme un athlète de grand avenir – champion d’Espagne du 5000 mètres dans la catégorie espoirs il y a deux ans – déclara après l’événement :

Some weren’t all that good, most were decent, but a few of them were absolutely fantastic in my opinion. They sometimes get a bad reputation for just making people feel good for the time being.
