Son bec, en forme de poignard et ses pattes sont jaunes. Lorsqu’il est jeune, son apparence est plus terne, avec les motifs de la tête moins marqués. Le héron cendré est un grand échassier solitaire. Les hérons cendrés nichent généralement en colonie (héronnière), laquelle peut être fréquentée durant des siècles. En Charente-Maritime, le héron cendré se comporte souvent en précurseur dans la conquête de nouvelles colonies, attirant par la suite d’autres ardéidés.
