Information Sheet for Magnetic Hematite Jewelry Hematite gets its name from the Greek haimo for "blood," because of the color of its powder. This stone is a compact form of iron oxide. It is harder than pure iron, but much more brittle. Due to its fragile, glass-like nature, great care should be taken in handling hematite items. Its color can vary from a black steel color to a brownish red. Gemstone quality hematite is a silvery opaque stone that almost looks like metal. Like nearly all commercially available "hematite" beads, this hematite is a simulated material virtually identical to real hematite. The simulated material is much easier to produce in detailed shapes, and looks and feels like the real material. This gemstone is created by magnetizing simulated hematite (natural hematite cannot be magnetized!) Potential Benefits of Magnetic Hematite A wide variety of health benefits have been attributed to magnetic jewelry. Hematite can help to balance out the emotions and energies between the body, mind and spirit.

Karen Leland: Bring Social Media Sanity To Your Small Business Every morning, I walk across the street from my townhouse and take a stroll by the San Francisco Bay. The paved pathway I amble down is a flurry of bike riders, power walkers, and locals taking their dogs out for a morning stretch. Earlier this week, I came across a springy King Charles spaniel happily chewing on a tennis ball, when he suddenly became aware of his owner filling up his water bowl at the drinking fountain. The dog -- who had previously been in a state of single focus bliss -- began to nervously shift his attention from the ball, to the bowl and back again. I know just how that dog feels. And so does any small business owner or entrepreneur, who is confronted with crafting a modern marketing strategy out of the vast array of choices presented by today's social media landscape. "I think small businesses are confused about what they should do and how they should do it," says Brian Halligan, CEO of HubSpot. Just what is that right way? 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

City needs retiree incentives I think the appointment of a commission to find ways to make Lawrence and Douglas County more appealing to retirees is a very good idea. Lawrence and the surrounding communities enjoy a number of significant advantages in such an effort: Kansas University can provide a multitude of activities for seniors, including the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute run by KU Continuing Education; we are blessed with excellent cultural institutions and programs; the cost of living is moderate; and we have a terrific medical center in Lawrence Memorial Hospital, among other things. But if Lawrence and Douglas County are going to become a major retirement living center, then we also need to think about the special problems retirees face today and will be facing in the decades to come....

Guide for Small Businesses 88% in poll say they're worried about retirement Retirement worries continue to grow, and the cloud of pessimism has blanketed all Americans. Last month, 88% of 800 registered voters said they were concerned about maintaining a comfortable standard of living in retirement, up from 73% last year, says a national poll out Thursday by Americans for Secure Retirement (ASR). In the past, Americans have differed about what causes the most anxiety. Now, retirement has moved to the forefront, says Celinda Lake, president of Lake Research Partners, a public opinion and political strategy research firm that conducted the poll. Regardless of age, income, education or political party, the poll found that retirement is at the top of the list. "This recession has been so terrible and so long that we essentially have flattened consumer confidence across essentially everyone in the country," says Bill McInturff, founder of Public Opinion Strategies, which also conducted the poll.
