The Castle Chinas Abandoned Wonderland - Alan Taylor - In Focus - The Atlantic - StumbleUpon In Chenzhuang Village, China, about 20 miles northwest of central Beijing, the ruins of a partially built amusement park called Wonderland sit near a highway, surrounded by houses and fields of corn. Construction work at the park, which developers had promised would be "the largest amusement park in Asia," stopped around 1998 after disagreements with the local government and farmers over property prices. Developers briefly tried to restart construction in 2008, but without success. The abandoned structures are now a draw for local children and a few photographers, who encounter signs telling them to proceed at their own risk. Reuters photographer David Gray visited the site on a chilly morning earlier this month and returned with these haunting images of a would-be Wonderland. Namibia's Coastal Parks - Behind the Lens: Photograph or Painting? While on assignment in Namibia for National Geographic magazine, Frans Lanting captured this surreal landscape image in a location called Dead Vlei. Due to the nature of the lighting in the frame, the photograph appears almost like a painting. We asked Lanting to take a few moments away from his current assignment in Africa to answer readers' questions about the photograph. Due to limited internet connectivity in the field, he was only able to provide brief responses to questions, so we asked Elizabeth Krist—Lanting's photo editor for this story—to offer additional detail where appropriate. From Shay Mordo: Absolutely amazing composition! Lanting: Here's a short summary about the making of the photo. Photograph by Frans Lanting Krist: Our photographers do extensive planning, often selecting specific locations before they even set foot in the field, and in this case Frans was fortunate to have his wife, Chris Eckstrom, helping with research and logistics.

No man is an island (unless you’re Simon & Garfunkel), but what if your home was a planet? Not an independent planet within a solar system, but rather your street, your house, backyard and front yard were all part of its own self-contained globe. A new project called Stereographic Street View transforms any location into its own three dimensional panoramic floating island. Different types of environments and landscapes offer a variety of results generating unique islands for each location. Just a few hours ago, this short video using Stereographic Street View from Max Novakovic went up online.

The Astounding Design Of Eixample, Barcelona | All That Is Interesting - StumbleUpon Constructed in the early 20th century, Eixample is a district of the Spanish city of Barcelona known for the urban planning that divided the district into octagonal blocks. Influenced by a range of schools of architecture, Eixample Barcelona was designed in a grid pattern with long streets, wide avenues, and rounded street corners. Despite being in the center of a thriving European metropolis, the district provides improved living conditions for inhabitants including extensive sun light, improved ventilation, and more open green space for public use. Seven Bizarre and Beautiful Natural Phenomena Man-made miracles, move over! These beautiful natural phenomena prove that Mother Nature is the ultimate creator: Beautiful Natural Phenomena: Fire Rainbows The Fire Rainbow is the colloquial term for the atmospheric phenomenon, circumhorizontal arc. The rainbow occurs when the sun is more than 58 degrees above the horizon, and the light emitted passes through a cirrus clouds. Cirrus clouds, which are made up of hexagonal ice crystals, must be shaped like plates parallel to the ground for the effect to occur. When the sun’s light enters the cloud vertically, the light leaves the ice crystal from the bottom, and the crystal bends the light to form the rainbow arc. Beautiful Natural Phenomena: Black Sun The Black Sun is the phenomenon in Denmark, which occurs just before sunset in spring and autumn.
