You can listen to the winning stories and read about the authors below. From a doctor who works in remote communities and writes in her spare time to an established children's book author and a reformed political speechwriter - the interviews with this year's winners paint a fascinating picture of the diverse lives of writers in regional Australia. You can also read stories by all the 2007 finalists, by the two young writers who were selected this year for special mention and by previous winners. This year we received 1800 entries, significantly more than last year, and the standard of entries was, according to our judges, also appreciably higher. The poor readers who knew a lot about soccer were three times as likely to make accurate inferences about the passage as the good readers who didn’t know much about the game. That implies that students who score well on reading tests are those with broad knowledge; they usually know at least a little about the topics of the passages on the test. One experiment tested 11th graders’ general knowledge with questions from science (“pneumonia affects which part of the body?”), history (“which American president resigned because of the Watergate scandal?”), as well as the arts, civics, geography, athletics and literature. Current education practices show that reading comprehension is misunderstood. First, it points to decreasing the time spent on literacy instruction in early grades.

The first screen shows an analog clock displaying a time - initially 9 o'clock - and a pane below showing the matching time phrase. On the second screen there is a mini-game. While playing the game, a cat is displayed in the bottom left of the screen, with a bridge infront of her. The target language is time phrases, specifically: Half past, quarter past, quarter to, five past/to, ten past/to, twenty past/to, twenty-five past/to. These were chosen as they are the main phrases used to tell the time. This game is made with Javascript with the CreateJS framework.
