At first I’ve started making and learning about the technical principles of Pop-ups. Sketch Picture 3 During my workflow I was inspired by nature. Later in the process, I’ve tried to unite the Pop-up technique and the laser illustrations. First I’ve made a plan on the computer. CFSL.net Slotted Building Discs While reading the December issue of Art Forum Magazine, I came across a brilliant Damián Ortega sculpture made of tortillas. Of course I immediately wished I could play with them. So I scanned some recent collage circles I’d made, printed them out, and made these building discs. It’s surprisingly tricky to build with them, but amazingly addicting. If you have older kids, they will definitely be challenged. Jack and Tess are having a great time with them too, but their structures are much more simple. If you’d like to make some, you can download and print out my template at the bottom. I also took some sandpaper to an old circular candy tin, and they fit in there perfectly. Templates: (Click on each images below, then print.)

Arabic / Islamic geometry 02 The beginnings of these design studies These studies began a long time ago and derived from an interest I have always had in mathematics in general, and geometry in particular. Recently I came across a couple of studies that were among the first I carried out; some others have been lost and some are in private ownership. The illustration above, from which the three following details have been taken, is of one of the original drawings I made in the early 1970s. At this degree of magnification it is possible to see how the grain of the paper, a smooth cartridge, interacts with the ink from the drafting pen. Finally, this detail of one of the junctions illustrates one of the problems of joining lines at bends in the pattern. This first exercise did not have any construction lines associated with it, as can be seen here. This next exercise was carried out in order to explore the construction of a pattern I had noticed as having been drawn with a single, continuous line. go to top of page

SUMMARY A good index to the performance of any building frame is the structural weight required to shelter a square foot of fioor from the weather. My three-way grid of structural members results in substantially uniform stressing of all members, and the framework itself acts almost as a membrane in absorbing and distributing loads. Definitions of terms The basic and fundamental character of the inventive concept herein disclosed makes it desirable to define carefully certain terms some of which are used with special connotation, as follows: Icosahedron. Icosacap. EquiZateraL-Having all the sides approximately equal. Framework.
