Learnist: A Helpful Tool on the Road to Inquiry
The meaningful and careful use of technology is one of the most significant conversations in education today. When educators offer students greater access to knowledge through technology, and encourage them to use that knowledge to inquire about the world around them and beyond, they are providing students a chance to succeed in even the toughest conditions. I teach eighth- and tenth-grade English and sixth-grade Speech/Drama for Stockton Collegiate International Schools. Our mission is to "offer the rigorous, relevant and practical International Baccalaureate (IB) curricula and methodology to urban students grades K-12 in order to prepare them for post-secondary education and global citizenship in the 21st century" and to "enable students to become literate, self-motivated, competent, lifelong learners by providing a multi-cultural, student- centered environment." Although our school is only in its third year, we are already making a mark on the community.
Texas Nature Trackers
More than ever, people are interested in watching and learning about Texas wildlife. Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, along with other partners, offers Texans the opportunity to do just that while making valuable contributions to the conservation of animal and plant species in the state. Texas Nature Trackers, associated with the Texas Master Naturalist Program, is a citizen-science monitoring effort designed to involve volunteers of all ages and interest levels in gathering scientific data on species of concern in Texas. Through Texas Nature Trackers projects, you can learn how to gather data about various species found on public lands or on your own property.

Several months ago I registered for an account with Learnist, one of the more recent of a growing number of options for managing and sharing web-based resources. There’s no avoiding, at least from where I’m sitting, the popularity of tools like this among educators looking for better ways to not only track current trends, but also engage students. Similar to Pinterest, “a virtual pinboard” where you can “organize and share the things you love,” Learnist is also structured with online boards that feature visually appealing layouts. Learnist’s more focused mission is to “make it easy to share what you know and learn new things.”
Project WILD
Texas Parks and Wildlife Department sponsors a suite of Project WILD programs, each offering a special iteration of this outstanding, hands-on approach to learning. Project WILD is a Kindergarten through 12th grade environmental and conservation education program emphasizing awareness, appreciation and understanding of wildlife and natural resources. It is interdisciplinary and supplementary and can be used to teach basic skills in science, social studies, language arts, math, art, music and physical education.
Three Questions to Consider Before We All Flip
It seems like you can't open an education periodical these days without finding an article espousing the wonders of flipping the classroom. Like most initiatives in schools, flipping the classroom does have merit in the right situation. But also like most initiatives it's not a one-size-fits-all solution.
