How to Make a Terra Cotta Flower Pot Bird Bath You've seen them in magazines, on television and in books. Well, hunt no further. Here are complete instructions for you to make your own Terra Cotta Flower Pot Bird Bath. Your best bet for decorating terra cotta that will be used outdoors is Patio Paints. I know they are a little pricey, but they are fade resistant, non-toxic and designed for outdoor use. Another option for protecting your work would be a water-based polyurethane. For the saucer of your bird bath, try to find a waterproof type that won't require any treatment inside the bowl, where the water will go. One each, 12", 14", and 16" terra cotta flower pots One - 20" diameter clay saucer. Sand away any rough spots or loose clay particles on the rim, bottom edge, and outside of the pots and saucer. Seal the inside of all the pots, (and the saucer if it isn't waterproof), with oil-based polyurethane -2-3 coats.

Summer Fun: Microwaved Ivory Soap | Wendolonia When I came across the idea to microwave Ivory soap on The Cyber School Mom Diary’s fantastically comprehensive Supermegatotally Thrilladelic Not Bummer Summer list, I was instantly intrigued. “What happens when you microwave Ivory soap?” I asked. “Try it and see!” Chrissi told me. “It doesn’t damage anything and it’s cool.” I immediately added it to our summer fun list and once Wyatt saw it he was dying to see what happened. Soap! It definitely did not disappoint. We started off with a hunk of plain old Ivory soap . How cool is that? I’d also like to take a moment to note that I’m mortified by how dirty my microwave is in this picture. Anyhoo, the kids were thrilled by this project and have been begging me to do it again since the first exciting result. Have you ever microwaved Ivory soap? If you’re visiting Wendolonia for the first you may be interested in checking out some of my other kid-centric posts:

Mosquito Trap Olive Cheese Bread. Mmmmm, this is yummy. Three or four years ago, I prepared roasted beef tenderloin, tomato-basil pasta salad, roasted asparagus, and this olive cheese bread for a cattlewomen’s luncheon with over 200 hungry ladies in attendance. They loved the tenderloin (recipe coming soon), but what they really went gaga over was this olive cheese bread. The finished product does have quite a strong salty/olive flavor, so for anyone who’s not an olive fan, this might be a little strong. "Olive Cheese Bread"—the words alone make my mouth water. The Cast of Characters: French bread, green olives, black olives, green onions, butter, real (not low-fat or fat-free) mayonnaise, and Monterey Jack Cheese. Place one regular-sized can of black olives on a cutting board. Give them a rough chop. Do the same with a 6-oz jar of pimiento-stuffed green olives. Just give ‘em a rough chop; no need to go crazy. Now slice two green onions… Into thin pieces… Then give them a nice, rough chop all over. Add 1/2 cup mayonnaise.

Button canvas shoes I picked up a cute pair of blue shoes for Mini Me at my local Target this weekend. I wanted to jazz them up just a bit so I hit the craft room with the Plain Janes. Luckily for me, Chica had left her box of colorful buttons at my house… a plan was formed! I decided to replace the laces with buttons. I knew the look I wanted but initially had no idea how to make it work so the shoe still functioned. Then I laced up the shoes with the elastic, adding a button at each hole. Because the holes were so close together, I couldn’t use all big buttons. This project went really quickly.

Library: Does LED attract insects? For several decades pest management professionals (PMPs) have been advising their customers about the kind of lights to use and their proper placement on the exterior of their home or business to reduce the attraction to night-flying insects. When they became available, PMPs advised customers to change exterior white incandescent or florescent bulbs to less attractive yellow bulbs, and mercury vapor lights to less attractive sodium vapor lights. Recently, the lighting industry has brought LED (Light Emitting Diode) lights onto the market for outdoor use. The question is, are LEDs a good choice for outdoor lights, and why or why not? What light is attractive to insects? Humans can see light wavelengths in the electromagnetic spectrum from 400-800 nanometers (nm), which ranges from violet to red in color, but does not include ultraviolet (UV) light at 350 nm. Insects generally see 3 colors of light, Ultraviolent (UV), blue and green. Characteristics of LED light. Take home message.

DIY: Mercury Glass {I finally tried this, you can see my results here} I'm catching up on a little light magazine reading because I'm finally DONE with finals this semester and that's about all I have the energy for! I'm so happy, but incredibly beat! Anyway, I saw this idea in Martha Stewart Living to make your own Mercury Glass and really want to try it. All you need is a couple of clear vases or votives, a spray bottle with water and mirror paint. Clean your vase or votive then cover the exteriors with paper. I love this idea! Has anyone tried this before? Make shoelaces out of hair ties Last week when my sister was gathering items for her daughter’s first dance class of the season, she realized that her tap shoes were missing their shoelaces (surely the latest victim of their kitten’s playful nature). Because the shoes only had one pair of eyelets for the shoestrings to go through, they needed some VERY short shoelaces. My sister began a quest for short shoelaces that night, visiting every store in town. When she called me to tell me about the problem, I pulled from my memory a handy trick that I had learned about ages ago… you can use elastic hair ties as replacements for shoelaces! My sister was dubious but eager to have a solution, so she was willing to give it a try. I told her to find some elastic ponytail holders with decorative balls on them (remember how popular they were when we were kids?). First you fold the hair tie in half. Now pull it through the other hole. Loop it around the decorative balls (or in this case, flowers) which will secure it in place.

How to Make Butter For someone who loves butter as much as I do, you'd think I would know more about it. Who knew people other than farmers could make butter? I honestly never thought about making butter until I saw an article in a local paper. But it looked so beautiful and fresh and mother-earth like that I had to try it. It's an amazingly short process and so much fun to watch the cream do it's thing - thick, thicker, thickest!! And if I was going to make my own butter, I had to make homemade buns to go with it. Even store bought butter and fresh bread is my personal version of heaven. Ingredients:2 cups heavy cream (whipping or heavier)pinch or two of salt, optionalWhat to do:1. 13. 14. Notes:By "rinsing" the curd with ice water, the butter may last up to 3 days.

Upcycle: Pillowcase to top tutorial I teased some post a go asking what could I make with a pillowcase, ribbon and some lace? Here is the answer =] A pretty vintage top. I loved the flow this particular pillowcase had and since it was one of the last sets Ken had before we moved together, I didn’t think he’ll miss it hehe (it’s for a single bed and there is another one in case we need it) There are so many possibilities and well pillowcases are easy to find right? I really liked the green and mixed it up with some vintage lace I had hanging around, I used ribbon for the straps and even tho there is a lof of pillowcase dresses and t-shirts out there, I wanted to show my version because I made it so to be very loose-fitting and comfy. To make this top is super easy and you dont need a serger at all (even tho if you have an extra one you can always send it my way! * This tutorial is provided for personal, non-commercial use only.

How to make a heart shaped egg In my previous post, I did a how to make cube shaped & pyramid shaped hard boiled eggs. (see “how to mold a hard boiled egg”)It was a lot of fun making the molds, but some of you must be thinking “Yeah, but that’s a lot of work to make a mold for a hard boiled egg…” and I completely agree. I’m just a nut. So I’ll show you a very easy & popular method to mold a hard boiled egg in Japan. [How to make a <3 shaped hard boiled egg] - Egg - Milk carton or any juice carton (cut open, washed well and dried) - Chopstick (round one is ideal) - Rubber bands Step 1: Cut milk carton and fold it in half lengthwise. This is all you need. Step 2: Make a hard boiled egg. Step 3: While the egg is still warm, peel the egg and put the egg on the milk carton, place a chopstick on the center of the egg, and put rubber bands on the both ends. If you don’t have a round chopstick maybe you can put a skewer inside a straw and use it. Make sure the egg is freshly boiled and warm. It’s cute as is. Tagged as: eggs
