An introductory guide to iPads for Teachers I’m delivering some iPad training to a school tomorrow, so thought it might be useful to collate some of the links I’ve been putting together for the session. The session is concentrating mainly on teachers using the iPads for their own professional use, rather than being used as a classroom resource, but a lot of the apps below will be suitable for use by students too. I’ll do another post sometime of great apps for different subject areas. Here’s some of the useful apps I’d recommend investigating. File storage / Transfer Dropbox Dropbox is probably one of the most useful applications I’ve used in years. Other apps also work with Dropbox too. Word Processing / Office Capability Documents to Go Microsoft have yet to release an Office app for the iPad – so there’s a need to look at alternatives. The spreadsheet would make it possible to set up grade books and student record sheets without having to buy additional gradebook applications. I am no expert, nor even a veteran in curating apps for the classroom, but I am off to a great start for this next school year. Here is how I have discovered using an iPad in the classroom. Skype for the iPad is invaluable for connecting with classrooms around the world. Green Screen Movie FX is an iPhone app that I use on my iPad to create movies in front of a green screen in my classroom. I intend to use Green Screen Movie FX a lot for social studies. Cinch is also an iPhone app that I use on my iPad 2 to create classroom podcasts. Finally, Weebly ! I looked into other websites that many educators use to host thier classroom blogs and webpages, but Weebly had more to offer me. Also, Weebly allows you to create multiple pages. Ipadschools - home Making assessment meaningful After spending two hours a day this week watching seventh graders fill in bubbles on our state's standardized test, I am finding myself thinking about assessment. Specifically, I am thinking about the many ways the iPad has enriched and strengthened our daily assessment practices -- and the value I see in authentic, embedded, process-rich assessment that informs and improves instruction. Technology like the iPad offers incredible ways to gather meaningful data that shows student thinking and creates a rich and detailed picture of learning. It can also make assessment more efficient, save teachers time, and open opportunities for more responsive teaching. The iPad makes new assessment practices possible. As I explained in an earlier post, the camera also adds a new layer to the assessment process. Using tools such as Google Forms allows for an additional method of embedded, just-in-time assessment. Saving iPad Files Through iTunes If you’ve ever made a video in iMovie, a song in Garageband, a book in Book Creator, (or made anything really) on an iPad, than you know the pain of getting that product off of the iPad. That’s why I’ve made this video (below) to teach you how to pull files off of the iPad, and how to put it back on to the iPad, in less than 5 minutes. I’ve started to teach students how to do this, so that as a teacher I’m not stuck for hours each week managing these devices. The other issue is digital citizenship. The BEST part? Enjoy the video.
iPads in schools! They just play games! | IPAD 4 SCHOOLS 20th Century pedagogy + iPads = Gaming So, you’re in your classroom and annoyed that the kids are playing games on the iPads. You have devised a strategy and at random intervals, you ask them to double-click the ‘Home’ button to see the last apps used. Great! Well done on controlling the situation so they can get on with: writing their notes;Reading their e-textbook;completing their essay or‘Researching’ on the Internet. The only step forward you’ve really seen is the ability to use that Shakespeare app or Dissecting Frog app. The parents too, have complained that all they seem to see is game playing and maybe your school is considering limiting the apps allowed on the devices. Well done on introducing iPads. Now you have introduced a radically new and powerful learning device, you need to update your pedagogy to match it. Why are these issues the most important?
