Cocteau Twins Cocteau Twins were a Scottish rock band active from 1979 to 1997, known for innovative instrumentation[3] and atmospheric, non-lyrical vocals. The original members were Elizabeth Fraser (vocals), Robin Guthrie (guitar, drum machine) and Will Heggie (bass guitar), who was replaced by multi-instrumentalist Simon Raymonde early in the band's career. While the entire band earned much critical praise, Elizabeth Fraser's distinctive soprano vocals received the most attention. At times barely decipherable, Fraser seemed to veer into glossolalia and mouth music. History[edit] Formative years: 1979-1983[edit] Rise to fame: 1984-1989[edit] In 1985, 4AD signed an agreement with Relativity Records for distribution of the Cocteau Twins' releases in the US and other territories. Mainstream success: 1990-1994[edit] The group released Heaven or Las Vegas in late 1990. The band's seventh LP, Four-Calendar Café, was released in late 1993. Taken together, their nine albums, and sixteen EPs/singles, sound less like a band and more like an element of nature. Which was very 4AD. Ivo Watts-Russell has always claimed that his aim was to unearth music that was timeless, free of any trend, movement or era and even in their earliest incarnation, the Cocteau Twins were true to that remit, firmly charting their own course. The band's name was plucked from an old Simple Minds track, but the foundations were laid some time before, when old school friends Robin and Will saw Liz dancing in a disco. They stayed a trio, with a drum machine on board, so preserving their tightly knit, private world. Cocteau Twins – Free listening, concerts, stats, & pictures at Last IAMX Elizabeth Fraser talks about why she finds it too difficult to even think about her old Cocteau Twins bandmates The Cocteau Twins had been apart for seven years, the mystique they had attained during their lifetime gradually growing and their influence spreading, when the announcement came that they were to reform. The world was told they would be headlining the 2005 Coachella festival in California, and would follow that with a major tour. According to bassist Simon Raymonde, the band stood to benefit to the tune of £1.5m each for getting back together – enough to guarantee them financial security, enough to secure the future of Raymonde's Bella Union label. There was just one problem. Within weeks of the announcement, the group's singer, Elizabeth Fraser, announced she wouldn't take part. "I don't remember it being that much money and in any case that's not the reason [for reforming]," she says today, in her first interview since the band split in 1998. However, Fraser almost immediately had reservations. It's not just her former bandmates she has left behind. Pop was always Fraser's escape.

An appreciation of the Cocteau Twins On this website I have made an effort to sketch the beauty of the music of the Cocteau Twins, a band from Scotland consisting of Robin Guthrie, Elizabeth Fraser and Simon Raymonde. In all the band were together from 1982-1996, during which period they delivered eight studio albums, many more EP's and singles and several other projects. For those unfamiliar with the band's work this short history will introduce them to the main facts and figures of the Cocteau Twins' career. From 1999 to 2004 roughly every two weeks a review of one of their songs was added. If you are new to the Cocteaus this site may well give you a good impression of their music, and may even encourage you to purchase a few of their albums. In any case: I hope you enjoy the contents of this site as much as I enjoyed creating it! Occasionally a Cocteaufest is organized. See the Cocteaufest homepage page for more info.
