Consumer Behavior: The Psychology of Marketing Why Advertising Is Failing On The Internet Editor’s note: The following is a guest post by Eric Clemons, Professor of Operations and Information Management at The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. In it, he argues that the Internet shatters all forms of advertising. “The problem is not the medium, the problem is the message, and the fact that it is not trusted, not wanted, and not needed,” he writes. The views he expresses are his own, and we present them here to foster debate. 1. The expected drop in internet advertising revenues this year was neither unpredictable nor unpredicted, nor was it caused solely by the general recession and the decline in retail sales. Pushing a message at a potential customer when it has not been requested and when the consumer is in the midst of something else on the net, will fail as a major revenue source for most internet sites. 2. The internet is the most liberating of all mass media developed to date. 3. Consumers do not trust advertising. 4. (Photo by nickyfern). OK, guys.

The Attention Economy: An Overview - ReadWriteWeb Written by Alex Iskold and edited by Richard MacManus It is no secret that we live in an information overload age. The explosion of new types of information online is a double-edged sword. We both enjoy and drown in news, blogs, podcasts, photos, videos and cool MySpace pages. And the problem is only going to get worse, as more and more people discover the new web. Because of this information explosion, we no longer read - we skim. Economics of Attention Things get more interesting when we realize that our attention crisis is not only our problem. When information is abundant, the false positives are very costly - they are basically deal breakers. Attention Economy Concepts The basic ideas behind the Attention Economy are simple. It is important to realize that the key ingredient in the attention game is relevancy. Another key ingredient of the Attention Economy is privacy. nma viral brand chart You know you’re working in UX when … I’m sure you’ve heard the expression 'Never work with children or animals' right? Well, after you’ve read this lot, I reckon you’ll want to add participants, facilitators and even clients to this list. You see, since my last blog I’ve spent a few weeks “playing journalist” sourcing weird, wonderful and downright bizarre stories from the UX (User Experience) Community. The idea came to me while I was telling a friend how I had to sit throughout a whole study earlier this year in Norway, trying not to crack up every time a participant had to fill in his name on a form. So it got me thinking that there must be other amusing or even downright weird experiences that my fellow UX practitioners might like to share with me... and share they did! They’re all anonymous and I hope you at least find them interesting, even if they might not tickle you as much as they tickled me. Read more... Even though it's early January, this is not a 2014 predictions post.

The secrets of the ads that 'stalk' you Imagine walking into a shoe shop in the high street, picking up and looking at a few pairs of shoes, before putting them down and leaving the store. Then imagine checking out a few other shops before popping into a newsagent, where you start flicking through a newspaper. As you do this, a display appears with the exact same shoes that you were interested in half an hour earlier, along with a deal attempting to lure you back to make a purchase. That experience is pretty much analogous to personalised retargeting in the online advertising world and might explain why you might sometimes feel like those shoes or those bikes are stalking you across the web. Brands such as Office and Halfords are amongst the first in the UK to employ this sort of retargeting technology, provided by companies such as Criteo and Struq. How does it work? He added that their ads not only increase click through rates, but also increase conversion rates -- where people actually buy the item in the ad.

Gist Adds Public Business Profiles The basic idea of Gist is to harness information, filtered for relevance, based on your connections. So who you know informs the data that is intelligently presented to you in an email digest, on a dashboard view on the Gist website and via iPhone or Android device. Gist has added some new enhancements that are increasing the usefulness of this turbocharged relationship management tool: Signature block extraction. Many people put valuable information into their emails signatures, but until now, if you wanted to extract someone’s phone number, title or any other nugget of information embedded in the bottom of their email to you, you’d have to copy and paste it into your contact database. When you claim and modify your profile, you can proactively weed out some of the superfluous content that the system may have culled from the web pertaining to you, such as out-of-date or little-used email addresses. Practical Uses of Gist I can organize my contacts by tag or keyword.
