How to make gift bags from newspaper
When I bought something at a store recently, the clerk handed me my purchase in a bag made from a newspaper. I liked it very much and had to make some more—thus today's DIY recycled newspaper project: gift bags made from the Wall Street Journal. You can vary the dimensions, of course, but here's what I used to create a bag that's 5" tall, 4.5" wide, and 3" deep. Stack two sheets of newspaper on top of each other. Cut out a rectangle that's 15.5" wide and 8.25" tall. Fold a flap 1.25" down from the top. Cut two pieces of cardstock or chipboard to 4.25" x 1", then glue them on the widest two panels just under the top fold. Put glue on the outside of the 0.5" tab and bring the left-most panel over to form the body of the bag, aligning the cut edge of the panel with the folded edge of the flap. Upend the bag so the 2" flap is now up. Put glue on both flaps and fold them inward to form the bottom of the bag.
PB Knock Off Candles
Look what just showed up in my brand new Pottery Barn catalog - music candles. Lovely, but $29 for the largest one? Really? I picked up two pillar candles on sale at TJ Maxx for $2 a piece. Download the pdfs of music here (tall) or here (wide). Cut the tissue to fit the candle. The tissue takes on the color of the candle. I learned that you can remove the tissue if you change your mind by gently pulling off the paper. Take that, Pottery Barn.
Dock at the World's First 3D-Printed House
In the future, 3D printers will help architects quickly build efficient mass housing projects from recycled materials, effectively solving the worldwide housing crisis while reducing the industry's dependency on raw materials — of course, that idealistic vision at this point remains light years away. A bold group of Dutch architects, however, have decided to bring this utopian future a little closer. DUS Architects have commenced building an experimental 3D house along a canal in Amsterdam. And, now you can go watch 3D materials slowly coagulated into a house! Add To Collection Save this image to a collection To build the 3D Print Canal House, DUS purchased a shipping container on the internet, and transformed it into a giant 3D printer with the help of printer experts. DUS was already printing with smaller printers, but saw the opportunity to create unique buildings from recycled plastics and other materials by scaling the size appropriately. 3D printed housing has a long way to go.
Laptop Cover
as one of the artsy ants is currently getting to know her baby girl and adjusting to life as a mother of two, we've invited some fellow bloggers and crafty friends to share guest posts with us all. today, please welcome kat ezat of life's jewels on string. Super quick and easy upcycled laptop cover Sometimes it's necessary for my hubby to travel for work. Last time he needed to carry his laptop in a smart messenger bag, but was reticent to shove his nice computer in there for fear of scratches. I had an idea: why not fashion a thin light cover that will protect the surface but not add weight or bulk? I dived into my bag of old clothes/sewing scraps (yes I have one, probably more like three - maybe I have a problem...) and pulled out an old H&M wool vest. This is what I did: -First I placed the computer on the inside-out vest and tried to decide a sensible way of fitting the laptop 'into' it. - Then I sewed along the marked lines, removing the pins as I went. Tips:
Paper Scrap Light / Chandelier
It’s a whopping 70 degrees in Brooklyn right now, so I’m going to get out from under the pile of packing boxes in our house and get some fresh air. Before I head out, I wanted to share this beautiful (and totally genius) DIY light project that graphic designer Gabrielle Guy created for a friend. After moving into a new house and finding an old lantern left behind, Gabrielle decided to cut strips from scrap paper and glue them onto the shade. Two days later, the result was an incredibly stunning artichoke-like lamp that looks expensive but cost close to nothing. Below is a summary of this week’s highlights:

Recycle Tutorial – Making Of T-Shirt Yarn | craftpassion.com
Another tutorial to help save our Mother Earth by turning unwanted items into something useful. This is the yarn ball I made out of an old T-shirt which I have been wearing for 10 years day-in day-out, wash-in wash-out. It finally broke down and tore at the collar and sleeves. I have finished making the drawstring bag as shown above. {CLICK HERE to get the Recycle Tutorial – Making Of T-Shirt Yarn.} Pages: 1 2 Print / Download PDF
