30 Stunning and Inspirational Comic Covers
In the past it was rejected as a secondary form of art, the 20th century transformed comics into a mass medium. From comic strips to graphic novels, the gender has increasingly grown in number of publications and popularity. With the expansion of the gender came the necessity of creating covers that look amazing and attract new readers. Comic book covers are not only the preview of what's under them, but stunning works of art. Sometimes it's a good idea to look for inspiration outside your usual field of action. In this post, we compiled some of our favourite comic covers from the last years. White Cherry Blossom Tree Painting It was Christmastime, last year. My daughter and I had just visited the craft store for some supplies and decided to browse around Pier One, which just happens to be next door to the craft store. They always have such a wonderful display of ornaments and I’m always on the hunt for inspiration. That’s when my daughter saw a painting she loved and asked if I could make one for her. Funny story actually. This is the painting that she saw (pictured left, daughter’s cell phone) and the picture on the right is from the Pier One website. So here we are, fast forward 12 months and my baby girl is moving out on her own. Luck would have it that my contact at DecoArt gave me an assignment that couldn’t have had better timing. The only supplies needed for this project are a 24″x30″ canvas, a small household sponge, some matte sealer spray and the following Americana paint colors: Slate Grey Neutral Grey Sable Brown Fawn Soft Black Traditional Raw Sienna Dark Chocolate Cashmere Biege Light Mocha Aww!

High Speed Liquid and Bubble Photographs by Heinz Maier It never ceases to amaze me: just when I think I’ve seen every possible permutation of an artform or technique—be it figurative sculpture, stop motion animation, or in this case, high speed photography—somebody comes along and manages to do something radically different. German photographer Heinz Maier says that he began taking photographs less than a year ago in late 2010. He claims to not know what direction he’s heading in just yet, right now he’s experimenting with macro photography, mostly insects, animals, and these delicate high speed water droplets. Personally, I think he’s found a great direction. There are so many things happening here to make these photographs simply outstanding: the lighting, the colors, the occasional use of symmetry in the reflection of water, let alone the skill of knowing how to use the camera itself.

Lackadaisy Expressions Boy, I didn't know what I was getting myself into when I started this. I've had requests for some sort of expressions tutorial dating back a while now, so I figured, "Sure! I can explain expression drawing...and it'll be way better than all those tutorials out there that are nothing but charts of generic expressions. Yeah! Just give me a day or two to whip something up..." Um. Anyway, I found all I could really do was try to explain ways to teach yourself...and then add some pictures.
