di yesterday i went up to salt lake to the ABC channel 4 studios and filmed a live segment for the Good Things Utah show. first time ever on tv and let me tell you it was totally cool! (but it still stressed me out...) i went into the green room to wait until it was time for me to set up. there on the wall was the 10 foot poster with the Lost cast. i set up a table with beautiful wool beads and little dishes of supplies with all the steps ready to show the felt bead rings from my book. i had only just got a mike on and stepped behind the table when the camera man said '10 seconds and you're live' i thought ok, here it goes. i decided to post a tutorial here so you can make one of the felt bon bon rings from the show for yourself. lay your circle template over the wool bead to choose the size then trace the circle onto the back of a piece of felt with a pencil or a water soluable marker. here are some variations i have made. those fancy sew on gems were on an old hat i bought.
DIY Découpage Floral Bag When H&M asked us to DIY a boho-inspired item for their summer issue, découpage was the first thing that came to mind. Honestly, does it get any better than customizing a simple handbag with a brilliant floral print? However you create it, it’ll be satisfying to know that you’ve designed yourself a one of a kind bag! You’ll need:a handbagcotton fabric with a large floral patternpainter’s tapeMod Podgecraft paint2 small plastic dishes2 brushesscissors Start by taping off the edges and hardware of the handbag. Squeeze a dollop of colored craft paint into a small disposable container. Allow the first layer to dry completely. While the paint dries, carefully cut out a handful of flowers from the fabric. Arrange them onto the painted section of the bag. Remove the painter’s tape when the Mod Podge has dried clear and your floral handbag is complete! (all images by HonestlyWTF)
DIY Sequined Heart Hairbow Kelly LanzaStudio DIY It’s time to get you prepped and ready for Valentine’s Day! And the only way to do that? Sequin heart bows! No matter who you’re saying “I love you” to on this adorable holiday, sequins should definitely be involved. Craft up one of these inexpensive bows for you, or your kiddo, and spread the love! Supplies: Felt Sequin Trim Strong Fabric-Safe Glue (I used E-6000, my fave!) Cut out three pieces of felt: One heart, one 12″ by 2.5″ rectangle and one 4″ by 1″ rectangle. Spread a bit of glue on the point of your heart and attach the end of your sequin trim. Begin to weave the sequin trim back and forth in lines, adding glue line by line as you go. Keep going until you have covered the entire heart. You’re likely to have a few spots where you can see the felt popping through around the edges. Now you have a perfect sequin heart! Pick up your larger felt rectangle and make it a into a loop by hot gluing the short ends together. Kelly Lanza

Pineapple Costume for Halloween Here we have it folks, the final DIY costume of the 2013 season. And, yep, I’m going out with a classic Studio DIY fave… a pineapple! You may not think it, but this is the PERFECT last minute costume that is easy to make, and brings a whole lot of impact! If you can find yourself some green poster board and a toilet paper roll, you’re all set! I’m pretty obsessed with how this turned out, if I do say so myself, kinda wishing I could wear it every day… …perhaps I should replace my typical bows with pineapple toppers!? Green Poster Board (You can usually find this in the multi-color packs at office supply stores.) Cut out all your leaves from your green poster board (one large sheet was all I needed). Now move to your second largest leaves. Repeat this process, using consecutively smaller leaves and working your way down the cardboard tube until you reach the bottom. Pair with anything yellow you own or can find, and you have a costume, my friends! All Photos by Studio DIY

No-sew Beach Cover + How to Use a Pareo/Sarong Wow! Back in February I made a DIY beach cover up that has had a crazy popular response. I've been meaning to make a no-sew version, but I haven't been able to. A lot of people have criticized my dark brown color choice for the original post, but in the winter there weren't tons of bright colored jersey fabrics being sold in stores. The second way involves a pareo (I got mine at amazon.com for $6/each. 1.75 yards of jersey or stretchy cotton material* Ribbon/any other material for a strap Scissors (1) Cut it. (2) Braid it. (3) Attach it. (4) Adjust it. Now let's get to sarongs or pareos. Let's talk about wearing them! (1) Twist front. (2) Greek. (3) One Shoulder. (4) Twist Front 2: Similar to the first, instead of roping the ends, simply wrap them around each other and then bring to the neck, knotting behind. (5) Knotted Front. (6) Vest. To use the pareo as a bag, simply place everything in the center and roll it like a burrito. That was the longest post.
