Now it is time for you all to pony up for the DVD's. Once funded, the raw footage will be massaged into stuff that will fit into DVD-like thing-a-ma-jigs. The crown jewel here is the rocket mass heater, based on rocket stove technology. Ernie and Erica Wisner have built over 700 rocket mass heaters and what was shown at this workshop is the result of their most advanced work to date. I learned this high-falootin word at my permaculture training. Hugelkultur is nothing more than making raised garden beds filled with rotten wood. I do think there are some considerations to keep in mind. Another thing to keep in mind is that wood is high in carbon and will consume nitrogen to do the compost thing. Pine and fir will have some levels of tanins in them, but I'm guessing that most of that will be gone when the wood has been dead for a few years. In the drawings at right, the artist is trying to show that while the wood decomposes and shrinks, the leaves, duff and accumulating organic matter from above will take it's place.

Tomm and Sabrina had lots of rocks available on their land, and so slipforming was the obvious choice for building their dream home. The slipforming method they used is largely to early slipforming methods used in North America, with one significant improvement: Instead of wire ties to hold the forms together, Stanley ran threaded rod through plastic sleeves, and used wingnuts on the outside of the forms to tighten the forms. This book is most appropriate for builders in mild climates since Stanley used only the thermal mass of the walls to moderate hot and cold temperature extremes, much like adobe houses in the southwest. The author uses both Imperial and metric measurements in the book, which makes it useful to readers anywhere.

Ook weer in een oude Nederlandse vuilnisbak met een 60 liter olievat er op bij wijze van bell om de geproduceerde hitte op de vangen. Bronnen in de U.S.A. zeggen dat het lastig is om een kleine rocket goed te laten werken. Op de een of andere manier werkt een 150 mm systeem niet altijd goed, het wordt pas leuk als het groter wordt. Het zal wel weer te maken hebben met gelaagdheid, in de heatriser dit maal. Verder heb ik het testbed naar binnen verhuisd en aan de bestaande schoorsteen aangesloten. Om kort te gaan, de constructie is eenvoudig. De metingen waren aanvankelijk geen verrassing: de verwachting was dat het ding een heel onrustige grafiek op zou leveren en dat deed het ook.
