Parenting: How NOT to Raise Spoiled Brats By Jim Taylor, Ph.D. In my last post , I described what I have seen as a rise in spoiled and fiscally irresponsible brats among both wealthy and less affluent families. Several commenters suggested that it's impossible to not raise spoiled brats in a moneyed family, in particular, because it is such an ever-present and influential force in these children's lives. Yes, I have known and worked with moneyed families (and those who aspire thus) who absolutely spoiled their children rotten and the kids are the worse for it. At the same time, I have known and worked with other families of means who raised children who were respectful, responsible, caring, and compassionate, and who were making real contributions to the world. What distinguishes these two groups is not the dollar figure on line 37 of IRS Form 1040; both are large. So, the question is: how can parents avoid raising spoiled brats and develop fiscally responsible children who have healthy relationships with money? Chores Allowances

Quirky Ways to Get Your Kids to Behave I've made a lot of bad rules in the decade I've been a mom, from irrational threats ("No graham crackers in the house ever again if you eat them in the living room even one more time") to forbidding human nature ("You may not fight with your sister"). But occasionally I've come up with rules that work better than I'd ever contemplated. These made-up rules have an internal logic that defies easy categorization, but their clarity and enforceability make them work. Several of them are not, technically, rules at all, but declarations of policy or fact. And they're all easy to remember. A few personal favorites, plus those of other moms: Rule #1: You can't be in the room when I'm working unless you work, too Goal: Get your child to help, or stop bugging you, while you do chores It might seem odd, but I don't mind doing laundry, cleaning floors or really any kind of housework. I tried to explain to my expanded brood that if they helped me fold laundry, we could do something together sooner.

Intelligence Is Overrated: What You Really Need to Succeed Albert Einstein’s was estimated at 160, Madonna’s is 140, and John F. Kennedy’s was only 119, but as it turns out, your IQ score pales in comparison with your EQ, MQ, and BQ scores when it comes to predicting your success and professional achievement. [More from Forbes.com: 10 Steps You Can Take To Become A Successful Young Leader At Work] IQ tests are used as an indicator of logical reasoning ability and technical intelligence. Research carried out by the Carnegie Institute of Technology shows that 85 percent of your financial success is due to skills in “human engineering,” your personality and ability to communicate, negotiate, and lead. [Related: Habits of Highly Productive People] With this in mind, instead of exclusively focusing on your conventional intelligence quotient, you should make an investment in strengthening your EQ (Emotional Intelligence), MQ (Moral Intelligence), and BQ (Body Intelligence). W. Hunter Roberts: What Matters: Taking Back Your Life Lately I've been talking with a lot of people who feel out of control. I don't mean they feel out of control just regarding the economy and politics. Many of us feel that way, and with good reason. Recently I met someone who did something radical about it. He figured it out watching his best friend from the age of 6 die of cancer at 45. We talked of souls and meaning, love and God. Leaving everything is a dramatic move. We make choices we call practical without questioning what it is we wish to practice. So what profits a man who gains the world and loses his soul? That's what matters. For more by W.
