The Astounding Design Of Eixample, Barcelona Constructed in the early 20th century, Eixample is a district of the Spanish city of Barcelona known for the urban planning that divided the district into octagonal blocks. Influenced by a range of schools of architecture, Eixample Barcelona was designed in a grid pattern with long streets, wide avenues, and rounded street corners. Despite being in the center of a thriving European metropolis, the district provides improved living conditions for inhabitants including extensive sun light, improved ventilation, and more open green space for public use. And of course, the result from the grid-like structure is astounding from above: How to Create a Claymation or Stop-motion Video Claymation is an animation technique used with clay figures. Basically, each movement is a new “shot” and the “shots” are connected together at the end to make a movie. Famous claymation cartoons like Gumby and Wallace and Gromit have made the artistic form popular. Stopmotion is the original animation technique used to create cartoons. You can use any kind of toy (legos, for example).
Animated Gifs An artist known only as Rrrrrrrroll will leave you spinning with some gif art that works hard to put the art in the gif genre. And yes that was intended as a pun. I guess you could think of the work as ‘animated photography’. If you know or find any more information about the artist please drop a line or two in the comment section. So I sorta owe Matthew DiVito AKA Mr. Div a post since I posted some of his work last week and didn’t credit it properly. We Need More Kids Apps Like 'Robot Factory' Raul Gutierrez, the founder of the Brooklyn-based kids app company Tinybop, worries about the effect brands are having on the way kids play. Here’s how he sees it: Today’s kids movies and TV shows are great, but as their stories seep into more and more toys, the possibilities for the imagination are constricted as a result. Whether or not you agree with that diagnosis, it spawned a tremendously cool kids app. The Robot Factory, available for iOS devices for $3, is the first in a series Tinybop is calling “Digital Toys.” It’s just what it sounds like: an animated workshop where kids can mix and match dozens of parts to create robots of their own design, including an obstacle course-like environment where they can test their bots. It’s meant to be highly open-ended.
Graphics Interchange Format The Graphics Interchange Format (better known by its acronym GIF; /ˈdʒɪf/ or /ˈɡɪf/) is a bitmap image format that was introduced by CompuServe in 1987 and has since come into widespread usage on the World Wide Web due to its wide support and portability. The format supports up to 8 bits per pixel for each image, allowing a single image to reference its own palette of up to 256 different colors chosen from the 24-bit RGB color space. It also supports animations and allows a separate palette of up to 256 colors for each frame. These palette limitations make the GIF format unsuitable for reproducing color photographs and other images with continuous color, but it is well-suited for simpler images such as graphics or logos with solid areas of color.
Ten minute no-sew recycled t-shirt bag! Tutorial time! I got a gig teaching a recycled t-shirt project at the library a few months ago, with a request for a recycled tee bag – the only bags I’d made from tees in the past had required sturdy sewing, and I didn’t want hand-sewing to be the only thing holding the bottom closed in a class version of the bags, so I started brainstorming about some kind of hand-sewing-friendly or no-sew bag idea…. and here’s what I came up with! The simplest version of these bags is great for smaller tees, or the more light-weight kind of girl-tees – just turn the bottom of the shirt into a drawstring and tie it closed! As you can see, even with a not huge tee, this will still leave a significant hole in the bottom of your bag, but for purposes like grocery shopping, this size hole shouldn’t really matter…
Islamic Medical Manuscripts: Bio-Bibliographies - I Ibn ‘Abd al-Muṭṭalib (or al-Muṭlib), Muḥammad ibn ‘Abd Allāh (fl. before 1546/953)محمد ابن عبد الله ابن عبد المطلب Nothing is known of this author except that he wrote a Persian treatise on magical medical procedures, extracts of which are preserved in a unique copy now at NLM (MS P 29, marginal item 31). The treatise is written in the margins of another treatise. The volume bears an owner's stamp dated 1546 (953 H), thereby providing a date before which the otherwise unknown author must have worked. Ibn al-‘Arabi, Muhyi al-Dīn (d. 1240/638) Ibn al-‘Arabi, also known as al-Shaykh al-Akbar, was one of the most celebrated of medieval Islamic mystics (or Sufis).
App Uses Kids' Obsession With Phones to Teach Them Coding When Raul Gutierrez’s son was younger, he came up with a great name for his father’s smartphone. “He’d call it the everything machine,” says Gutierrez, founder of childrens’ app company Tinybop. “Because to him it could do everything.” The kid was onto something. A smartphone really is an everything machine. It’s a phone, a camera, a movie screen, and so much more, stuffed into a glassy rectangle that fits in your pocket.
