Reading Adventure Packs: The Lorax The featured books for the The Lorax Reading Adventure Pack are The Lorax, written by Dr. Seuss, and Tell Me, Tree, by Gail Gibbons. The Lorax, The Lorax tells the story of how the greedy Oncle-ler hacks down Truffula trees in order to make Thneeds, a rather frivolous item that he believes everyone needs. The Lorax disagrees and tries to reason with the Once-ler to get him to see the consequences of his actions on the environment, but is ignored and the Lorax himself must flee when all is destroyed. In Tell Me, Tree, we learn how to identify different kinds of trees as well as the parts of a tree, inside and out. The book also discusses the important roles trees play in our lives. The-Lorax-Contrast-WHILE-WHEREAS-UNLIKE-CONTRARY-TO.pdf The Lorax Activity Developed by: Dr. John Ramsey, University of Houston The focus of this activity is to introduce and understand the concept of sustainable development by using ideas found in The LORAX. The LORAX is a fictional story about a man whose activities abused the environment and about what he learned from the experience. Sustainable development is an important (and complicated) idea for all human beings to understand. "Human needs" refers to the basics of human life. "Economic needs" refers to monetary systems used by human beings in their activities. "Technology needs" refers to the tools, methods, and/or systems used by humans. "Environmental needs" refers to the protection, preservation, and conservation of biotic and abiotic resources in the natural world. You can see that sustainable development is a tricky idea. After you and your class have read The LORAX, please complete the activity that follows: Interpreting Events and Meaning in The LORAX The characters of the story include: 1. 2. 3. 4.

The Lorax - Teaching Children Philosophy Author: Dr. Seuss Publisher: Random House Summary by jayme johnson The Lorax has gone. Guidelines for Philosophical Discussion The Lorax , by Dr. One underlying message contained within the Lorax that is a good source of philosophical discussion is the idea of the interconnectedness of the things that live in an ecosystem. Answers to many of the questions about our social responsibility to the ecosystem seem currently to be driven by the notion of sustainability . So far the discussion has been geared to the idea of social responsibility , but we can also ask about what the nature of social responsibility itself is. One final interesting philosophical topic that gets raised in the Lorax might be called the intrinsic value argument for environmental preservation . Questions for Philosophical Discussion The Lorax tries to speak for the trees. When the Lorax first appears to speak on behalf of the tress, the Once-ler claims he is doing no harm by cutting down Truffula Trees to make Thneeds.
