Swedish artist Sanna Dullaway has injected some colour into a host of historic photographs | Mail Online - StumbleUpon By John Hutchinson Updated: 16:02 GMT, 19 January 2012 They say some things are be better off left in the past. But Swedish artist Sanna Dullaway clearly doesn't agree with that concept as she has transformed some of the most famous black and white pictures ever captured into high resolution colour versions. While purists may disagree with the modernisation of such historic pictures such as the celebrations that marked VJ (Victory in Japan) day, images of devastation from Pearl Harbour and the shocking shot of a Viet Cong prisoner being shot in the head by an army general (demonstrating the brutality of the Vietnam War), the colour pictures do appear to re-emphasise the scene they are portraying. Little is known about the creator of these iconic images, but it is thought she is hoping to sell her work on the internet - and there is sure to be some firm interest. Clouds are created when rising air, through expansion, cools to the point where some of the water vapor molecules “clump together” faster than they are torn apart by their thermal energy. Some of that (invisible) water vapor condenses to form (visible) cloud droplets or ice crystals. The Arts | Art Wolfe and the rise of nature photography Seattle photographer Art Wolfe cites his early training as an educator as the chief inspiration for his founding of the International Conservation Photography Awards (ICPA) in 1997. "I love teaching, I love inspiring, and I love mentoring," he said recently at his SoDo studio. "This was just an extension of that." Helping young photographers find a public venue for their work was important to him. After finding homes at the Museum of History & Industry, Rainier Square and Wolfe's own studio, the competition has found a permanent home at the Burke. While a number of the photographers are local, the subject matter is international — and so, increasingly, are the people behind the lens. "The first time we started doing this it was, relatively, a regional exhibit. As Wolfe sees it, the competition serves two purposes: "It provides a great platform for photographers to see their work in a very respectful way and to be judged amongst their peers. Go ahead: Laugh if you want (though you’ll benefit your brain more if you smile), but in my professional opinion, yawning is one of the best-kept secrets in neuroscience. Even my colleagues who are researching meditation, relaxation, and stress reduction at other universities have overlooked this powerful neural-enhancing tool. However, yawning has been used for many decades in voice therapy as an effective means for reducing performance anxiety and hypertension in the throat. Several recent brain-scan studies have shown that yawning evokes a unique neural activity in the areas of the brain that are directly involved in generating social awareness and creating feelings of empathy. For these reasons I believe that yawning should be integrated into exercise and stress reduction programs, cognitive and memory enhancement training, psychotherapy, and contemplative spiritual practice. Why am I so insistent? My advice is simple.
