Addition & Subtraction Games

Addition & Subtraction Games
Students place markers on the numbers 2-12. Students toss two 6-sided dice, find the sum and remove a marker from that number, if there is still one. The first player to remove all markers wins the game. This game can be used as addition practice or as an introduction to the probability of the different outcomes of rolling two dice. Curriculum - Mathematics / Elementary Math Kindergarten MathThe kindergarten mathematics program uses a concrete manipulative approach to counting objects through ten; recognizing, sequencing, and writing numerals through ten; and associating set, numeral and ordinal position. The student is introduced to sets and numerals through twenty, six basic geometric shapes (circle, square, triangle, rectangle, ellipse, and rhombus), comparative terms, positional location, telling time by the hour, naming days of the week, and patterning. Some children are introduced to simple addition and subtraction. Students focus on solving problems in everyday life and communicating oral solutions to problems. First Grade MathFirst grade mathematics students use manipulatives to recognize, extend, describe, and create a wide variety of patterns. Sixth Grade MathThe thrust of the sixth grade mathematics curriculum is mathematics as problem-solving connected to real life situations.

Shari Sloane - Educational Consultant Math Centers and Games (Click on any image to see a larger version of that image.) 10s Go Fish - This game is played just like "Go Fish." Instead of asking for a card to match your card, you have to ask for a card that would add with one of your cards to make a sum of 10. I introduced the game with out class 4th Grade buddies, but it was still really difficult. So I made up this little cheat sheet to show that combos that make 10. Shake and Share - To play this game, you need to make Casino bottles. Click here for the Shake and Share Addition PDF. Click here for the Shake and Share Subtraction PDF. One More - To play this game each, 2 children will share a sheet and a die. Click here for the One More PDF. More or Less? Click here for the More or Less PDF. Measurement Here are some great sites to use when working on Measurement with your students! Length Heigth Weigth Capacity Volume Mathematically Sane Guided Reading One of the things I've been struggling with this year at school is that there have been significant changes in the expectations for literacy instruction every year that I've been teaching. My first year we were told one thing. Last year that was tweaked in a big way. One change that was introduced last year is the way we are expected to distribute the time during a guided reading group. Here is a sample week of lesson plans for guided reading. I've tried a few different methods for data collection and informal assessment during guided reading, but I think I have finally settled on something that works well for me. Each group has a tabbed section with notes pages for each student. Because we are reading leveled readers from our core literacy series, my fluency notes aren't traditional running records. After finishing the "conference," I make a quick note about their overall comprehension and anything I noticed we need to focus on in the future.

Math Games Ever wonder what to do with the kids who always finish early?? Well, during math time, my students get to play math games. When they finish their independent work, I look over their papers to check for understanding. When I know they've got it, I assign them a partner, and they play math games. The partner group chooses the game they would like to play for the remainder of math time. The kids enjoy playing math games. I use a pocket chart that has 10 slots (I think it was originally made to hold cd's). Click on the pictures below to view/save the game directions. Here are the cards that I use, too. And that's it!
