"Designing Programs" - edited by Casey Reas (@reas) and Chandler McWilliams (@brysonian) #creativecode #design (This essay was commissioned by Centre national des arts plastiques for Graphisme en France 2012) - Edited by Casey Reas and Chandler McWilliams - Technical mastery and innovation are part of the rich history of visual design. The printing press is the quintessential example of how a shift in design technology can ripple through society. Examples Examples Bubble form finding with Large Deformation Variable bending stiffness in a randomly generated cell grid can be used to fine-tune the resulting shape.

Assembly Plugin for Rhino Introduction Rhinoceros1 is a 3D computer-aided design (CAD) application developed for Windows since 1992 by Robert McNeel and Associates (Seattle, WA, USA)2. RHINO MODELLING – Plethora Project Plethora-Project.com is an initiative to accelerate computational literacy in the frame of architecture and design. It aligns with the "show me your screens" motto of the TopLap live-coding group attempting to get rid of Obscurantism in digital design. Jewelry webinar About six months ago, Australian jeweler Chris Botha started playing with T-Splines for Rhino and posting his results in the T-Splines forum. His gallery thread has turned into the most prolific on our forum, with 161 posts and over 12000 views, and is filled with dozens of jewelry pieces that are distinctively organic. On Friday, October 28, 2011 5:00 PM – 6:00 PM EDT, Chris will present at a free T-Splines webinar, “How T-Splines changed my approach to making jewelry in CAD.” There are still spots available — register now for this free webinar. You won’t want to miss this chance to get candid insights from a T-Splines pro about how he uses T-Splines in his design process.

Unrolling Surfaces in Grasshopper This Grasshopper definition is proof of concept for a VB component that unrolls developable surfaces to the XY plane. To make the component, I’ve adapted a rhinoscript by Andrew Kudless (of Matsys) to run in VB, enlisting the help of CCA student Ripon DeLeon to write the code. This example uses the VB component to create unrolled surfaces from 4 curves that I have distorted using the cage edit command in rhino. To use the definition on your own projects, simply choose any 4 curves to loft between in sequential order. The blocks of components are grouped somewhat clearly (I hope) so you can add more curves by copy-pasting more blocks and making the few required re-connections to make it work. Please feel free to contact me with any questions.

supermanoeuvre SUPERMANOEUVRE is an architectural practice that sees computation as a means of opportunistically collaborating with the heterogeneity and flux of social, cultural and ecological substrates. Employing both genetic and phenotypical strategies of formation in which multiple intelligences and behaviours compete for the gift of instantiation, supermanoeuvre seeks to move beyond the diagram as the dominant of architectural understanding. The resulting complex and adaptive morphologies achieve their definition performatively as the emergent outcome of highly specific architectural concerns embedded within generating rulesets. The practice was co-founded in 2006 by Dave Pigram [New York] and Iain Maxwell [London] as a collaborative studio through which contemporary architectures may be engaged. This blog is intended as a active repository of knowledge pertaining to contemporary architectural resources, techniques and theory.

Design contest 2011: Make the world a better place Contest description The T-Splines Design Contest 2011, Make the World a Better Place, is designed to promote the creation of new and innovative 3D designs using T-Splines for Rhino and tsElements for SolidWorks. Prizes will be awarded to those individuals or teams who submit the best designs, as measured by the judging criteria. View the T-Splines 2010 design contest submissions. Winners

Rhinoceros 3D Help - Tutorials, Links, Galleries, Forum, Jobs, Video, Commands, CAD, Training This tutorial will cover some basics of designing and modeling a ring with T-Splines and Rhino 4. You can download this tutorial in PDF format here. Organic Modeling for Jewelry Design with T-Splines and Rhino® 4 Designing a Ring Digging on Shigeru I’m fascinated by Shigeru Ban’s Nine Bridge Club house. The projection of the a rectangular grid down into these funnel shapes is such a simple idea on a large scale and totally mind bending in the details. For my sketch, I made a quarter of one funnel with a revolve, cut it down to a square edge, divided the surface, then turned off the U and V grids, and used intersects projected from Level 1.
