How to Make Slicing Suck Less: Tips and Tricks for Slicing a PSD I have a dirty little secret, I hate slicing Photoshop files. By that I don’t mean that I hate turning PSD comps into websites, I mean that I hate Photoshop’s slicing tools. The whole process makes my PSD look busy, cluttered and overly complicated so I usually skip it altogether and instead opt to manually crop and save out images individually as needed. In order to fight this tendency and attempt to see the true usefulness of Photoshop’s slicing tools, I embarked on a mission to learn all the intricacies of how slicing works. Below is a collection of tips and tricks that resulted from this journey. There are Three Types of Slices in Photoshop Three types of slices!? The three different kinds of slices are User Slices, Auto Slices and Layer Based Slices. As you know, to slice a PSD you start by grabbing the Slice Tool (C) and drawing a box around the area that you want to export as a standalone image. When you perform a slice, you should get something like the result seen below.

Here’s a roundup of the most popular tutorial posts from 2011 based on the number of StumbleUpon ‘thumbs up’ votes. If you compare them with last year’s figures you’ll see a dramatic decrease in the number of likes per post, but at least traffic figures are still going strong. Using Your Images to Create Color Palettes in Photoshop Color is the one aspect of a design that can drastically change the tone of the entire project. Your color choices can make the difference between a polished, professional, perfected design and one that misses the mark altogether. Creating a color palette for your design doesn’t have to be guesswork; it can be easy done if you take a few simple steps, and use a few tools that are available to you. There are several ways for creating your own color palettes, but one popular method is to sample colors from the project’s primary image and build your color palette from color values within it. If you are using multiple images, you may consider selecting images with similar color palettes, so that the entire piece has a sense of unity. Step 1: Setting Up Your Canvas For our example, I am going to create a nautical-style advertisement. Step 2: Laying the Groundwork For the bottom third, I created a new layer, took the marquee tool and drew a white rectangle on the bottom third of the image.
6 Photoshop Alternatives for the Casual Designer Photoshop isn’t just an industry standard piece of image manipulation software used by professionals, it’s also an application that is sought after by many hobbyists looking to fulfil their creative passion. Unfortunately at $600 dollars it’s out of reach for most casual users, so other than pirating (which is bad mmkay), what high quality alternatives are available for the casual designer? If you’re a Mac user you are in luck. In my opinion the best alternative to Photoshop is the Mac only app named Pixelmator. With a lack of CMYK and print related features it doesn’t quite match Photoshop in terms of professional capabilities, but for image editing, manipulation and just creating cool artwork it’s definitely a strong competitor. Pixelmator also has a great selection of tutorials from its community, many of which from Abduzeedo. Looking for a completely free alternative? Finally we come to Photoshop Express Editor, Adobe’s own web based image editing program.
