New climate solutions could heal the rift over Copenhagen 'Plenty of ideas out there' ... smoke billows from a 'clean coal' plant in West Virginia that uses carbon sequestration technology to capture CO2. Photograph: Saul Loeb/AFP/Getty Images One of the first issues David Cameron highlighted on which he agreed with Nick Clegg was climate change. Was this because they could both say "I agree with Ed"? I hope not. Not that I have anything against Ed Miliband, one of the brightest stars of the outgoing cabinet, but he inherited a climate policy dating all the way back to John Prescott that amounted to "Copenhagen or bust".

Email Preservation: Turnkey Capture Tool? Earlier today, I interviewed Crawford Neilson, IT system manager for the Social and Public Health Sciences Unit at the Medical Research Council (the UK analogue to the National Institutes of Health). Since 2007, he has been using an open source program, MailArchiva, to mirror a copy of every sent and received message for 120 employees, to an external, searchable index. I’ll be writing up a case study concerning their use of this tool and will be posting that soon. But, in the meantime, I’d just like to share this link, because the software, based on his three years of experience and my examination of the documentation on their website, sounds like an incredibly useful and affordable option for those institutions that need or want to capture a complete email record. I have looked at several propriety systems that do the same thing, but none seem to approach this tool in the low startup and maintenance costs, or in the clarity of its documentation and marketing information.

Wired 4.12: Mother Earth Mother Board The hacker tourist ventures forth across the wide and wondrous meatspace of three continents, chronicling the laying of the longest wire on Earth. In which the hacker tourist ventures forth across the wide and wondrous meatspace of three continents, acquainting himself with the customs and dialects of the exotic Manhole Villagers of Thailand, the U-Turn Tunnelers of the Nile Delta, the Cable Nomads of Lan tao Island, the Slack Control Wizards of Chelmsford, the Subterranean Ex-Telegraphers of Cornwall, and other previously unknown and unchronicled folk; also, biographical sketches of the two long-dead Supreme Ninja Hacker Mage Lords of global telecommunications, and other material pertaining to the business and technology of Undersea Fiber-Optic Cables, as well as an account of the laying of the longest wire on Earth, which should not be without interest to the readers of Wired. Phone to stop the Bill! April 07, 2010 | Jim Killock 20,000 supporters wrote to MPs asking them to give the Digital Economy Bill proper consideration, especially giving time to consider the consequences of measure to remove internet access as a punishment for copyright infringement. You paid for adverts too: and the effect on the debate was profound, despite the resistance of the front benches. This is a matter of confidence in Parliament for many of us. I expect you are, like me, disturbed that serious laws can be pushed through without proper debate and scrutiny.

Technology in a warming world Few people understand that intellectual property rights (IPRs) underpinned the industrial revolution in Europe and play a fundamental role in economic growth. IPRs will be an essential stimulus to creating the new clean energy revolution: the catalyst for the investments, innovation, diffusion and deployment of the low-carbon technologies we need to limit and reduce greenhouse-gas emissions. Strong IPRs will provide the incentive for innovation. Any arguments that IPRs are “a barrier to technology transfer” are, quite simply, wrong. Policy interventions are required to price in the externalities so that the price signals will drive the market. IPRs provide the incentive to innovate; to make risky investments in developing, marketing and installing new technologies.

The cloud cannot ignore geopolitics Cloud computing is an operations model , not a technology: that critical fact underpins so many of the challenges and advantages that cloud computing models place upon distributed applications. It is the reason that so many existing application architecture concepts work in the cloud, and it is the reason that so many developers are forced to address aspects of those architectures that they could skimp on or even ignore in the self-contained bubble of traditional IT. One of the most fascinating aspects of cloud's architectural forcing function is the way it forces developers to acknowledge the difference between two often conflicting "realities" that applications must live in; that of the physical world we humans live in each day, and that of the computing world, consisting of electronics, wires, and its own set of rules, captured in software form. These two "worlds" are similar in some ways, but are often at odds with one another. For example:

When Bill Gates Does It, Bankers Pick Up the Phone. America’s Unfounded Fears of A Green-Tech Race with China by Christina Larson 08 Feb 2010: Analysis by christina larson At a factory in Wuxi, China, workers lift solar panels onto conveyor belts, while others in white lab coats move between machines as they check on a process for etching and engraving silicon wafers to form solar cells. This scene in itself isn’t remarkable.
