VisualCV - Creating a VisualCV Resume Are resumes old-fashioned? Well, you don't see many paper resumes anymore, and resumes are certainly getting more high-tech and Internet based. VisualCV is taking it one step further, offering a free online resume, which is actually more like a full portfolio than a resume, to job seekers. A VisualCV is an online resume that includes all the facets of a traditional resume, with add-ons like video, images, and links to your accomplishments. Clint Heiden, CEO and cofounder of VisualCV says, "The VisualCV is actually replacing the traditional resume which is an outdated, broken tool. We're replacing this broken, 20th Century tool with the robust recruiting tool of today and the future: the VisualCV. Presentation Matters Presentation always matters to me and I'm impressed by the design and layout of VisualCV's resumes. In fact, the VisualCV resume looks like a typical resume with your work history, education, achievements, and awards. Creating a VisualCV Privacy Options Using Your VisualCV

IT Tutorials and Interview questions LinkedIn and Your Job Search What do Microsoft, Ebay, Netflix, and Target have in common? All these companies (and many more) have used LinkedIn to recruit candidates for employment. Kay Luo, (former) Director of Corporate Communications at LinkedIn, explains why, "The main reason that companies are using LinkedIn is to find passive job candidates. Another reason why companies are using LinkedIn, is because referrals from their employees are highly valued because they typically have a higher success rate (hence the popular "employee referral bonuses"). LinkedIn helps companies leverage the networks of their employees." How Employers Use LinkedIn One LinkedIn member (who will remain nameless because his company doesn't know he's job seeking) I spoke to received an inquiry less than 24 hours after posting his profile. Steve Goddard obtained his current job through LinkedIn. The recruiter discovered Steve's work history, downloaded the information, circulated it to group managers, and then contacted him.

Cover Letter Errors Like job seekers, bloggers often reach out and network with each other. Just this week, The Pongo Blog received an inquiry from a potential guest blogger. Her message started with a nice compliment ("Your blog is so helpful!") Unfortunately, it soon became clear that this particular piece of flattery was less-than-sincere, as the next line said: "I would love to have one of our bloggers write a guest post for [sitename]." Wait, what? In this case it was kind of amusing and no big deal. Most employers these days have more qualified applicants than they can handle, so even a small mistake is reason enough to eliminate you. And while we’re on the subject, here are a couple others: 1. Ideally, you should address your cover letter by name to the hiring manager for the specific job. Acceptable options include: Dear Hiring Manager: Good Afternoon, (Or, if you're using a memo format...)TO: Hiring Manager for Marketing Associate Position, Job Reference 16754 2.

Using a Digital Signature to Spruce Up Your Cover Letters Home > Cover Letters > Using a Digital Signature to Spruce Up Your Cover Letters Most job applications are submitted through the Internet today, either through an online application system or by e-mailing cover letters and resumes as attachments. Sending electronic cover letters is very convenient, but it precludes the applicant’s ability to sign the letter. Unless you want to print out, sign, scan, and then e-mail every single cover letter you write, it’s easier to just send them without a signature. One way you can make your cover letters stand out is to insert a digital image of your signature. Many online application systems won’t be able to process the digital image of your signature. How to get a job in a recession - Mar. 30, 2009 (Fortune Magazine) -- Rob Sparno recently did something that 12.5 million Americans would kill to do. He did something that has never been attempted by this many people at once in the 60 years the government has been keeping records. He did something that's getting only more difficult with every day. He got a job. When Sparno, 55, a longtime salesman, lost his position at Oracle (ORCL, Fortune 500), he knew the search wasn't going to be easy. To keep his spirits up (another must if you're in the persuasion business), he organized a group of seven other executives - including a former COO and CFO - who also lived in his community of Princeton, N.J. Rather than blast out resumes, Sparno drew up a list of about 15 former colleagues who were now in leadership positions - his prospect list, in sales parlance. As every salesperson knows, getting prospective buyers to meet with you is just the first step. Two-and-a-half months after leaving Oracle, Sparno got the job. Michael J.A.

The Cloud Approach To Writing Your Resume One of the hardest things about writing a resume is the process of preparing it for electronic eyes--many resumes are scanned and ranked against preferred keywords and never even reviewed by hiring managers. (I can say this frankly because I have worked as a recruiter, and have selected the keywords for positions before listing job openings. I've worked on the "other side of the process.") As a job seeker, it's important to write your resume so that you can pass this first scan test. 1. 2. 4. You will now see a visualization of word highlights for your target position.
