ACTA: The new threat to the net

2,008,307 have signed. Help us get to our new target of 3,000,000 Update: 10 February 2012 Amazing! We smashed our 2 million target as we delivered to key decision-makers in Brussels this week -- let's get to 3 million before the crucial parliamentary debates Posted: 25 January 2012 Last week, 3 million of us beat back America's attack on our Internet! ACTA - a global treaty - could allow corporations to censor the Internet. Europe is deciding right now whether to ratify ACTA -- and without them, this global attack on Internet freedom will collapse. It's outrageous -- governments of four fifths of the world’s people were excluded from the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA) negotiations and unelected bureaucrats have worked closely with corporate lobbyists to craft new rules and a dangerously powerful enforcement regime. Big corporate interests are pushing hard for this, but the EU Parliament stands in the way.

It’s my longest article ever at over 4500 words but I think it was worth the time and the effort. I have been resisting doing this post for a while now. However, it kept niggling away at the back of my mind and I kept getting more and more ideas to add to it so here it is. I was originally inspired to do this by Dragos Roua who wrote a great post 100 Ways to Live a Better Life and who was inspired by Mike King in this great post 100 Ways To Be A Better Leader who was inspired by Armen Shirvanian: 100 Ways to Show Boldness who was inspired by the maniac

One Question That Will Change Your Life Forever Did you know that, barring some radical scientific advancement, you and everyone you know will be gone in 100 years? All of that hard work and perseverance disappears, just like that. All of those years of striving and “just holding on”, jettisoned into oblivion in an instant. Now that I’ve hopefully got your attention and giving you the right mindset, here’s the question: How does that make you feel? I’m not trying to depress you, but I’m being completely serious here.

Occupy has the power to effect change Occupy Wall Street protesters march through New York's financial district toward the stock exchange. Photograph: Jessica Rinaldi/Reuters Occupy movements in the US went on the offensive last week, a few days after police forcibly cleared tents in cities from New York to Oakland. In addition to holding their ground in the face of violent intimidation, they began to interrupt business as usual. Ways to Master the Art of Perseverance In reality, accomplishing what you want usually comes down to one thing: the art of perseverance. It’s not an inherent character trait, so don’t tell yourself “Oh well, I guess I’m not one of those people who can do _________.” Perseverance can be learned. In fact, you’re going to start learning it right now. But first, concentrate for a moment on whatever _________ is for you.

The Surfer's Guide to Personal Development Surfers have a different relationship with the ocean than most people do. Rather than admire its beauty from the sidelines, we feed off its energy because for most of us it’s a second home. We’re more comfortable in water than on land. It’s much more than a sport, but our calling in life. Every session leaves us with powerful life lessons and today I just wanted to share a few of my most important ones with you.

Kongressional Hearing: Amazing Unknown Punk Band From the 70s, Kongress When some magicians die, they vanish—their work done, their infernal ceremonies finished, their fire extinguished—leaving no traces behind. This was almost the case with self-styled high priest of rock magick, Geoffrey Crozier. Almost, I say, because some extraordinary documents of his short, turbulent time on this planet still remain. Dangerous Minds pal Otto von Ruggins is allowing us to showcase some of this rare and previously unseen material. If you are into vintage garage and punk rock insanity—like the MC5, New York Dolls or Alice Cooper, you know, the transgressively transcendent stuff that Julian Cope or Thurston Moore like—in all its mutant glory, then this post is for you. Geoffrey Crozier was an enigmatic magician/rock performer from Australia who was a legend amongst New York City’s underground rock cognoscenti circa 1975-78.
