How Google Works If you aren’t interested in learning how Google creates the index and the database of documents that it accesses when processing a query, skip this description. I adapted the following overview from Chris Sherman and Gary Price’s wonderful description of How Search Engines Work in Chapter 2 of The Invisible Web (CyberAge Books, 2001). Google runs on a distributed network of thousands of low-cost computers and can therefore carry out fast parallel processing. Parallel processing is a method of computation in which many calculations can be performed simultaneously, significantly speeding up data processing. Google has three distinct parts: Googlebot, a web crawler that finds and fetches web pages.The indexer that sorts every word on every page and stores the resulting index of words in a huge database.The query processor, which compares your search query to the index and recommends the documents that it considers most relevant. Let’s take a closer look at each part. 1. 2. 3.

How to Use Google Search More Effectively [INFOGRAPHIC] Among certain circles (my family, some of my coworkers, etc.) I'm known for my Googling skills. I can find anything, anywhere, in no time flat. My Google-fu is a helpful skill, but not one that's shrouded in too much mystery — I've just mastered some very helpful search tricks and shortcuts and learned to quickly identify the best info in a list of results. Sadly, though web searches have become and integral part of the academic research landscape, the art of the Google search is an increasingly lost one. A recent study at Illinois Wesleyan University found that fewer than 25% of students could perform a "reasonably well-executed search." That search process also included determining when to rely on Google and when to utilize scholarly databases, but on a fundamental level, it appears that many people just don't understand how to best find the information they seek using Google. Thanks to the folks at HackCollege, a number of my "secrets" are out. Infographic via HackCollege

Desktop Home Screens for Docs, Sheets and Slides Google already started to roll out the new desktop home screens for Google Docs, Google Sheets and Google Slides. They're available at drive.google.com/document, drive.google.com/spreadsheets,drive.google.com/presentation. If these links create new files, then you can't access the new sites yet. The goal is to provide a desktop counterpart to the mobile apps. The new home screens provide few file management options: you can only rename or remove files. All the desktop apps uses a sticky round button at the bottom of the page that lets you create new documents, spreadsheets or presentations. { Thanks, Herin. }

Conquer the back to school blues with Google tools August is both an end to the lush freedom of summer and the beginning of another year of student life. As a rising senior at the University of Florida, this time is both exciting and anxiety-inducing. Even though I’m looking forward to many aspects of the school year, there are certain things about college—from book budgets to calculus study sessions—that can make it a headache. But this fall, I feel more prepared to face the daily student grind. This is material design By Nicholas Jitkoff, Designer When we started building for the first mobile devices, mobile meant less: less screen space, slower connection, fewer features. A mobile experience was often a lesser experience. And as Google, including the Android platform, expands into new form factors, we’re introducing one consistent design that spans devices across mobile, desktop, and beyond. In material design, surface and shadow establish a physical structure to explain what can be touched and what can move. We needed something that felt at home on the smallest watch, the largest TV, and every screen in between. Material design, in L Bringing material design to Android is a big part of the L-Release of Android, the version we previewed today. Bringing material design to the web, with Polymer Last year at I/O we announced Polymer, an ambitious UI toolkit for the web.
