It would be great if every woman could afford to get her clothes straight from her private tailor who knows how to take good measures, but we do not live in a perfect world, unfortunately. What if we could have our own body dress form and learn how to sew?

All my closest friends know that I (Chanel) am forever on the search for the perfect, chic lunch box. And believe it or not, a lot of the prettiest and well-designed carriers out there are super expensive. So with this personal challenge in mind and with Picnic Week in the air, I was inspired to create my very own reusable lunch bag. Taking my pattern directly from the handy-dandy, classic paper lunch sacks that I predict will be around forever and ever, I put together this canvas version that’s reusable, washable and most of all, super pretty. There was a lot of hand-stitiching involved, but it wasn’t difficult at all and I’m head-over-heels in love with the final product.

I made a fake roll of toilet paper out of cardboard, and inserted a removable prank message for that moment of truth when your victim realizes that no salvation will come from that little white roll. This is a super simple sandpaper printing technique that will keep your kids busy and make one cute shirt! The best part about this fun little craft is that the supplies were bought at the Dollar Store, even the T-shirt! We used crayons we already had so we only spent $2.00 on our new T-shirt. Supplies for Sandpaper Prints good quality crayons, a t-shirt, iron and fine sandpaper. Our package of sandpaper had a selection and we used the finest.
How to sew a blind hem
Blind hems are fantastic. Using an ingenious method of folding and stitching, you can create a machine stitched hem that is nearly invisible from the outside. It’s a fantastic way to create a deep hem on a skirt, unlined jacket, or pants. I used to find them to be a bit of a pain, but honestly my Bernina and it’s wonderful blind hem presser foot have banished all my frustrations. If you have trouble with your hems, you might consider trying another foot, if your machine accepts them. It could make all the difference.

Ten minute no-sew recycled t-shirt bag!
Tutorial time! I got a gig teaching a recycled t-shirt project at the library a few months ago, with a request for a recycled tee bag – the only bags I’d made from tees in the past had required sturdy sewing, and I didn’t want hand-sewing to be the only thing holding the bottom closed in a class version of the bags, so I started brainstorming about some kind of hand-sewing-friendly or no-sew bag idea…. and here’s what I came up with! The simplest version of these bags is great for smaller tees, or the more light-weight kind of girl-tees – just turn the bottom of the shirt into a drawstring and tie it closed! As you can see, even with a not huge tee, this will still leave a significant hole in the bottom of your bag, but for purposes like grocery shopping, this size hole shouldn’t really matter… But to make smaller holes, just make more than one of them!

Here she is! My paper-tape double! Woohoo! Wow, I’m so happy this worked! This is a great way to get a dress form without having to spend hundreds of dollars, and the best part is it replicates your unique body shape!
Sleeves, Necklines, Collars, and Dress Types
I’ve recently ventured into drafting patterns starting from my basic bodice and skirt sloper. The fit issues are minimal, since the sloper is made skin tight. Design ease is added as you go along. I found these reference pictures useful for ideas on basic sleeves, necklines, collars, and dress types. These are from Vogue Sewing, circa 1982.

Ice Fabric Dyeing
Did you say you don’t have snow and want to do some dyeing? Well, before I put up my dyeing stuff, I thought I’d try one more type of dyeing – ice dyeing. For those of us who don’t have snow or would like to try this in the summer, this is an alternative. Please read my getting started and my fabric dye precautions posts before attempting this or any fabric reactive dye project. Since Judi had suggested I set my fabric up out of the dye, I tried that this time. I set a metal rack on top of cat food cans which I put into my dyeing container.
