Space Weather Prediction with Cosmic Rays Introduction This Website is a gateway for space weather displays based upon cosmic ray data returned by the Spaceship Earth network of neutron monitors and from the worldwide muon detector network. The top of the site contains reduced versions of the plots that we consider most relevant for space weather prediction. Click any plot to obtain an enlarged version. As our space weather products are improved and optimized, these plots will change from time to time. Below is a brief description of the multi-national team providing data for this site. Disclaimer This is a prototype, experimental site. Participating Institutions Spaceship Earth Spaceship Earth is an 11-station network of neutron monitors strategically located to provide precise, real-time, 3-dimensional measurements of the cosmic ray angular distribution. TWC's Exclusive TOR:CON Index Thunderstorm Outlook The Weather Channel's Severe Weather Expert, Dr. Greg Forbes (Facebook | Twitter) developed the TOR:CON index to estimate the risk of a tornado on a given day or night near your area. (MORE: What is TOR:CON?) TOR:CON Value Descriptions 8+ Very high probability of a tornado 6 - High probability of a tornado4 - Moderate chance of a tornado nearby, but hail and/or high wind gusts possible2 - Low chance of a tornado, but hail and/or high wind gusts possible0 - Near-zero chance of a tornado or a severe thunderstorm The TOR:CON index ranges from 0 to 10. For more on all severe thunderstorm threats, including damaging winds and large hail, check our severe weather tracker page. Note: By definition, a severe thunderstorm contains one or more of the following: hail at least 1 inch in diameter, wind gusts 58 mph or higher, or a tornado. Sunday, April 27 Severe thunderstorm and tornado outbreak in the following areas (alphabetical by state): Monday, April 28 Tuesday, April 29

Photos: Drought Disaster 2012 A Struggle for Farms Next Crops wither. Topsoil lies cracked and parched. Remnants of Hurricane Isaac dumped heavy rain on some key Midwest farming states, which dramatically lessened the drought there, but conditions worsened in two of the nation's biggest corn producers, Iowa and Nebraska, such as the dry corn fields near Bennington, Neb., above, which missed out on the badly needed moisture. Image: Black hole outburst in spiral galaxy M83 (Phys.org) -- NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory has discovered an extraordinary outburst by a black hole in the spiral galaxy M83 (Messier 83), located about 15 million light years from Earth. Using Chandra, astronomers found a new ultraluminous X-ray source, or ULX. These objects give off more X-rays than most normal binary systems in which a companion star is in orbit around a neutron star or black hole. Messier 83 is a barred spiral galaxy approximately 15 million light years away in the constellation Hydra. Explore further: SpaceX sues US Air Force over satellite contracts (Update)

Thousands Of Mystery Crabs Wash Ashore In Hawaii – Marine Biologists Baffled [video] Millions of small purple crabs washed ashore on beaches in Hawaii, baffling marine biologists who cannot identify the pea-sized creatures. The crab-like visitors in Honolulu are possibly ’7-11′ or reef crabs in a larvae stage but local scientists are still unable to positively identify the creatures, WTVR reports. Reef crabs are common along the Hawaiian island but biologists readily admit to never having seen “anything like this” before and are searching for answers to the tiny purple crabs identity and their recent massive arrival by the thousands of the small animals on the beach. Unfortunately many of the little purple crabs which washed ashore in Hawaii were already dead. Marine experts at the Waikiki Aquarium told Hawaii News Now that storms, influx of warm or cold water or pollution could have caused the arrival of the thousands of small purple crabs on the beach – but the Hawaiian islands have not experienced any of the three scenarios recently.
