Maximum PC
At Maximum PC, computer hardware is our bread and butter. We review it, preview it, and just generally love to talk about it. Unfortunately, hardware becomes less important with each passing day, as more and more software moves onto the internet. We're not looking forward to the day that our PC's become Chrome OS-style thin client, but we have to admit, some web apps are pretty awesome. So to help you prepare for a future in the cloud, we've put together a list of 30 of our favorite web apps and services. Since I’ve been using the iPhone (had a 1st generation and now 3G), I have been thrilled with the development of applications and it is easy to just start downloading anything and everything (especially the free apps). The idea here is to help focus the user on a few key apps that can support us as librarians. Of course, all can be used by anyone and most people will find these useful. Further, if you’ve had an iPhone for a while then you probably already use many of these apss. There are certain ones that I use constantly, and all of them are on this list. Remember the Milk Many of us like to keep lists. You can you have multiple lists in multiple categories. I tried many other tools for lists and finally landed with RTM and have been happy. On Leopard it was buggy (Though I do miss my Silent Night iTunes theme) and on Snow Leopard it corrupted the OS to the point of needing a full reinstallation of the OS. Firefox on OS X has also been disappointing for anything video related (with Netflix seeming to be an exception). YouTube (even with the fix provided in another LH post) and most video sites are very unreliable and pause every few seconds. Even Facebook's photo upload does not work properly (have to use the simple version). Chrome on OS X is indeed snappy, but the lack of addon support really cripples the functionality for people looking for a Firefox alternative. I have tried out Google Earth several times over the years, and I still do not really see the purpose of the application over something like Google Maps for your average user. Snow Leopard is neither Free nor a Download (That I am aware of). How about XBMC?
